Where can I get an inexpensive will drawn up in the Lake Chapala area or Guadalajara? Thank you for any advice.

Your best bet is to wait until September, which is always the month when many notarios discount the cost of making up a will. It's only a couple of weeks away!

Remember that in Mexico, a will is a legal document in a way that is different from the USA (I can't speak to Canada). Your will will be written according to your wishes, then drawn up in a document that is registered much like a birth certificate.

it's different than it is in canada too. the only reason to go to a notario here to draw up a will is if you have a property. otherwise it's not necessary unless you are willing something to a mexican friend or spouse maybe.property is the main concern, because the will you have from your previous country holds no weight here in that respect.
ALL NOTARIOS give a discount in september because it was a programme instituted by the gummint to alleviate the hassel associated with the will- less- ness of this society in the past and the problems that causes.

Don Pedro, with all due respect, not all notarios give the discount on wills in September. Some do, some don't.

then things must have changed because when this was instituted by an agreement between the gummint and the notario[association?] all of them were involved. do you have proof to the contrary? when we did it we had the pick of any notario we chose and that was about 4 years ago. if there is no longer an agreement,then it becomes a hassel for people searching out the ones that do it-no?

Well, don Pedro, Judy and I had our wills made in Morelia in September 2008 or 2009 and at that time in Morelia we had to ask several before we found the notario whose services we used. The several others we called all said, "Sorry, Notario So-and-So doesn't participate in that program." The charge was just about half what it would have been any other month.

Here in Mexico City, I just started seeing billboard advertisements for various notarios who do participate. The price being offered for a simple will is 400 pesos, far less than what we paid in Morelia.

I remember a couple of years ago calling a few notarios to see who was offering the discount in September. I was under the impression that it was "half-price" month. That wasn't necessarily the case - if I recall it varied by notario - but it didn't take long to find a recommended notario who was participating to an agreeable degree and offering a discount that satisfied us.

And also, my impression is that ANY property in Mexico, real-estate, important personal property or bank/investment-account oriented, justify having a Mexican will. That's what triggered the need for us. Glad we did it.

If you own property in the restrictesd zone, your fidiecomiso(trust) acts as your will, naming the beneficiary/ies in it. Saves a lot of hassle BUT the annual cost of keeping it is about $450 USD. They keep saying that someday (soon) the trust issue will go away but I don't really see that as it is a cash cow for the bank, government as well as the notarios. I did use a notario for my real estate customers who claimed it is discriminatory and as such should be done away with - pronto. Quien sabe?
