Inexpensive books

We just tried a cheaper way to get books here from NOB. Powells pays shipping on orders over $ 50.00 to anywhere in the US. We have tried to have books shipped to here by our local mail forwarding service and the cost was very high. We tried to have books shipped by Mexican mail but the shipping to Mexico was high. We just tried getting a over $ 50.00 order of books from Powells, which they shipped free to Sol Y Luna in Laredo. S y L’s charge to bring them here was very reasonable. For their service, on packages, they charge ½ of what the contents cost. Since Powells has a very large number of used books a good many at 2 or 3 dollars on our $ 50.35 order we wound up paying between $ 3 and 4.50 dollars each for most of our books. S y L even calls you when your order comes in and ours took 3 weeks. They do not require that you sign up for mail service to get packages delivered by them although they said that they will probably be offering a discount on their package service to their mail customers.

I'm always looking for inexpensive ways to ship books to Mexico, in my case Mexico City, so I read your post with great interest. However, I don't understand what sort of service Sol y Luna offers to Powell's customers. Do they "bring" or ship orders to customers in Mexico?

Thanks for your help.

Sol y Luna only works if you live in the overall Lake Chapala region. They are a new mail forwarding service, bringing stuff down from the border. It's good to know we have one that will bring books and things down. I'm afraid it won't help you in D.F.

Thanks for the answer, though it's not good news for me.

Bournemouth. What do you think of this new mail service? Will it be around for longer than the one that started at the lakeside Mall?

The reason I ask is; I pay $30 US per month at MBE. I may get one letter per month maybe two sent to MBE. What I do get are those large mail forwarding envelopes about every ten days. The Condo staff where I maintain my US address gathers and sorts my US mail and forwards what they think is not SPAM (junk mail) and forwards about 11 ounces of mail to me at a time. I pay something like $4.95 postage to have the mail forwarded in these large envelopes.

I go back to the states 4 times per year, and when I get there I get to sort through 2 to 3 grocery store bags filled to the top with junk mail.

I guess I'm trying to find out whether there is a better solution than MBE. No I do not have books or medicines forwarded to me. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Sorry for changing the subject of this string, but now that money is tight I am trying to find ways to save money.

Pete - I haven't tried Sol y Luna but when you get back here, you might go over and check them out. I think the only thing they are not set up to do is receive medicines legally. We use HandyMail and are happy with the service but Sol y Luna offers an outgoing mail service which sounds good.

Have a look at the website - they allow up to 3 names per box so perhaps you could find people to share with you - it would reduce the cost substantially:

Pete,

We will still be getting "mail" at MBE but Sol Y Luna does not require that you become a "mail" customer. We are not but they will still pick up your packages in Laredo and deliver them here. They did say that they will probably be offering a discount on package charges to their mail customers.
