How would you plan to do your first visit to Ajijic?

Ok, now that I have nailed down September as a good time to visit Ajijic, could anyone recommend a good way to see the area? For instance, are there good, moderately priced hotels or Band B's within quick walking distance to the center of the village? I would also like to check out the other towns from Chapala to Jocotepec. Would you rent a car or use the bus? The idea behind the trip is to see if this area is one we might be interested in retiring to. What other things should a first timer plan to do? Thanks in advance.

Pat, there are several very good B&Bs in town and you can walk to almost everything, restaurants, shops, etc. The Swan Inn is nice, next to the Lake Chapala Society which is handy for asking questions and making new friends. Great breakfast by the pool and a small "kitchen" with refrigerator just for the use of the guests, for their snacks, lunches, drinks etc. Several of the real estate offices have free house tours, and they take you all around to the various homes for sale, perhaps Joco or Chapala too. Gives you a great idea of the lay of the land. If you want to go somewhere, just walk up to the taxi stand at the plaza, and get a taxi for the day or the afternoon. Much cheaper than renting a car and lots easier than trying to take a bus, at least for now. Talk to people at restaurants, you'll meet some interesting folks and might even get invited to someone's home. There's a great little private airport just past Chapala, lots of interesting planes and ultralights, with many friendly Mexican pilots and plenty of retired U.S. airline and air force guys. If you want to go out there, just give us a holler and we'll be glad to take you. Also right here in Ajijic are some folks retired from Hilton Head who love it here in the village, whom you might want to meet and talk with. You're going to have a great time and I know how much you're looking forward to it.

Thanks Peggy. I will look into the Swan Inn. How, in you opinion, does it compare with the Posada Inn as far as location to the center of the village and accommodations are concerned? (If you'd rather not comment on the topic in public, please feel free to email me) Your suggestion to hire a taxi instead of renting a car was one I will surely take. I am interested in seeing homes in the village, as well as some in the surrounding communities. Both have their own advantages. Being close to the village would be very nice, but having the privacy of a gated community would have its benefits too. So many interesting choices! Oh, and airplanes, even! Sounds like paradise to me. Again, thanks for your responses to my inquires. You have been very helpful.
