Hole in One Restaurant for Lunch???

We've been to dozens of restaurants in the area during the months we've lived in Ajijic and our experience has usually coincided with the online reviews. However, our experience at the Hole in One restaurant did not agree at all so it motivated me to write this review.

We went there for lunch so I can't comment on the dinner staff or on the dinner menu selection.

The prices were reasonable and the ambiance was not bad--a view of the lake in one direction and a view of the mountains in the other combined with roomy and comfortable seating. However, the lunch menu consisted of just a few greasy, grilled and fried sandwich selections. In addition, the margarita I had was way too sweet--possibly suffering from too much sweet and sour mix--and the service was slow even though the lunch service was winding down.

The most disagreeable thing and the main reason I'm writing this review is my experience with the bill. First, the bill had a charge for 3 beers and one margarita even though my wife had 2 beers and I had one margarita. I mentioned that to the waiter, the bill was corrected (honest mistake or diversionary tactic?), and I handed him a 500 peso bill. He then returned with change as if I had given him a 200 peso bill. By this time, there were no other customers to hear the ensuing argument and it was my word against his (my wife having been in the bathroom when I paid the bill) so we finally left having now paid 300 pesos for the lesson never to go back there. Because I paid so much for the lesson, I decided it was worth sharing.

In contrast, I have found the staff at every other restaurant in the area to be honest and friendly, the food to be of good quality, the prices reasonable, and the menu selections to range from good to outstanding.

I urge you to go to SuperLake and tell your story to Pancho.

Absolutely. Owner needs to hear this. Sounds like crooked employee.

When did this happen, in the last 4 days since Tues? If yes, the regular waiter Juan was off for a few days to the coast and was replaced by a temp. I can't imagine anything you mentioned happening if Juan was there. As for too sweet, request a replacement, but the other things are not at all normal or indicative of the HN1.

Sorry that you had such bad luck there Mike. The few times I've been there, everything was great.

The replies have been very helpful and interesting. This happened 2 days ago so the waiter must indeed have been a temp. I will make a point of visiting the Hole in One for dinner because I know the food gets uniformly good reviews. I will try a margarita again but will most likely focus on the wine list.

CactusMike:

HN1 has received good reviews in the past but Eric, the wonder chef, apparently walked off the job about two weeks back. Rumor has it that a new very experienced chef has been hired but I haven't read any reports on him as yet.

OMG! If Eric isn't there I wonder how the food will be as we have always had perfect food and service there. The OP needs to tell Pancho at Super Lake of his problem. Pancho's uncle owns Hole in One.

Sounds like Pancho's uncle is the problem. He lost Eric and hired the thief.

I'm a bit amused at all the hand wringing over the "gourmet" aspects of a place that is a golf driving range? For gosh sakes people, it's just a driving range - that has a decent view and happens to have a restaurant and bar attached. Would you be as enamored with a bowling ally that has a restaurant and bar?

Folks, we really have reached the dog days of summer early this year if we're already fretting about the cook at the local golf driving range - step back and look at us from a safe distance; what a silly bunch of old gringos with nothing more to do than fret about the "gourmet" food at the local driving range, I'll bet they're howling in Hoboken at this one.

And, Juan will be back tomorrow, so stop worrying about that one as well.
