Hole in One, Part rwo

This is my favorite restaurant in lakeside, enjoy the lake and mountain views, enjoy watching folks on the driving range, and the wonderful breezes. The food is the best. Chef Eric is only 22 years old and cooks gourmet food. He was offered a scholarship to a school of cuisine in Spain a few months go. He could not afford airfare and housing, so we are blessed to have him here. His lamb shank is fabulous. Roasted and marinated for four hours. He marinates most everything. Went to lunch there today with two snowbird friends, and we watched him cut the fat off of beef and the raw filet mignon. Looked incredible, well marbled. My friends promised chef Eric that they would return. Hope they include me.

If you have not been there, go and let me know what you think. Prepare to do battle if you say anything negative about this amazing 22 year old maestro of comida. T

Thank you so much for this. Eric, is a 22 year old Mexican young man. So sad that he did not have the money to accept the scholarship in Spain, but my understanding is that it did not include air or housing., so we are blessed to have this amazing young man. Makes Tango look like dog food. Anybody know if they have computer access from Mexican Jails? Tango, you are my second favorite restaurant, please do not send me to jail. Thanks, T

A little nervous about my last post. Want to retract my comments about Tango. They serve great food. It is the most popular restaurant in Ajijic, and I do not want to be sued or deported. Just got a tad overzealous supporting the amazing 22 year old Eric. My apologizies to Tango and anyone else I might have offended. T

Nobody's sending you off to jail for your opinion since Eric isn't running for office. lol.

Haven't dined at Hole in One as yet, but have you noticed that the original filet mignon dinner there started out at 95 pesos (such a deal) and then jumped to around 140 pesos? (May be even more now)

At Tango, you can get a fine filet (an even better deal if you get the "filet for two"for much less than that, and it's delicious. I find that I prefer dining under the palapa there preferable to the fresh breezes, driving range action and plastic chair environment that's been described for Hole in One.

However.........each to his own, and I'm sure young Eric will have no trouble staying employed around here.

filet is a special muscle that has no marbling and doesn't require aging. if the meat you were looking at had marbling,it was not filet.

T - Our Bi Monthly Dinner group will be trying Hole In One in a couple of months. I have it scheduled. I'll report back here for the folks on everyones meal. You mentioned Tango, which we will NOT eat at anymore for various reasons, the prime one being the noise level being so high that you cannot have a dinner conversation. Too many people at too many tables.

Gringal - As far as Filet Mignon prices go, if Hole in One is $ 140., that's average now in Ajijic. Laurent is $ 140. and Hacienda Ajijic is $ 160. I believe the Filet for two at Tango is $ 180. Not sure

John........We have had the filet for two at Tango, plus quite a few steak tacos the next few days on the leftovers. Like you, we don't go there for dinner because of the acoustics, but love the barbied chicken for lunch....which is our main time for dining out.

Newsflash from Laurent's: They've upped their prices recently.

We've eaten there twice now, and the last time, both my husband's ribeye and my fish were disappointing.
Our guest had the filet and was happy.

You haven't tried it, yet? I am surprised. Prices have gone up. I think they were lower either to attract diners when they first opened or because they underestimated what they needed to have decent profit margin.

I think for what you get, their prices are more than reasonable. Some folks say it has no ambiance. I love the great lake and mountain views, the good and comfortable chairs that ( no plastic stuff and no equipale), full bar with premium liquors. It is in a different category than Tango. The menu is much more creative and upscale.

Eric'a lamb shanks are incredible.

Did you know that Pancho of Super Lake fame is part owner? If that guy does not know how to keep gringos happy, no one does.
Give it a try and let us know what you think. T

Surprised that your group has not been there, either. I agree with you about Tango. The tables are too close together and the noise level is high. I feel claustrophic when I am there. Last time I ordered salmon, and it was clearly frozen, not fresh. I was disappointed and I do not like equipale furniture. Not comfortable and when sitting at an equipale table, if you are of a certain height, what the heck are you supposed to do with your feet?

The Hole is wide open, lots of space between tables and maybe half again the size of Tango.

We will all be holding our collective breaths for your review. Grin.

Gringal - When were you at Laurent when you think he upped his prices? We were there for my Birthday on February 25 and he had not upped his prices. Three people had the Rib Eye and liked it very much. It was very good. I had the Filet Mignon which is now two small filets instead of one large one. It was over roasted veggies. Excellent.

T - Maybe Hole in One is different from Tango, but my friends who come from Toronto and others in my neighborhood who eat out a lot and order Rack of Lamb say Ajijic Tango has the "best" Rack of Lamb in Ajijic.

We have probably not tried Hole in One because two people in our Dinner group have walking difficulties and will not be able to go because of their location.

Lamb shanks do not equate to rack of lamb. Come from two different areas of the animal.

John, you prove my point. The two restaurants are very different. Tango offers ribs, but not shank. The Hole offers shank, but not ribs. I have heard The Hole has an elevator. Looked for it the other day and could not find it, but you might want to give them a call to find out for sure. T
