Has the flight begun?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Has the flight begun? Went to a party of about 25 today and at least half of the foliks knew people that wanted to go back NOB. The renters can leave, the home owners are stuck and real estate here is dead. I am a renter, but I will not leave until the bitter end. What are you thoughts? . Yes, I am absolutely trying to stir up discussion and controversy on this board .Discussion and controversy are paramount to a board's survival. T.

Yes, I'm running. When? about May 4th. What am I afraid of? The darn heat. But I will be back once the rain starts.

Pete, you're too funny.

Rolly, I have always wanted to visit Patagonia. The north end! I watch this cooking show on the Mexican cooking channel. It looks just beautiful. A place to get away from everything.

Our Assisted Living Facility is full. Go figure....with all the negative news we are doing well. However I don't know about the future. I don't see many people bringing their loved ones down with the ugly stuff going on. We will stay till they put me in the ground.

I too have talked to folks leaving. When this is all over many more will flock down. I will not leave.

Same Chicken Little; same song.

Just returned from a trip on the cuotas to the beach: Was stopped at all those little booths where we were held up for as much as 111 pesos each time; saw armed men sitting in cars nearby.
After returning; went to a local restaurant and saw two armed guys out front; the waiter explained that the "commandante" was having dinner inside. Had a good sandwich and was expected to pay at the end. Paid.

Where can we go a little closer than Patagonia for the month of May? How about into the air conditioned bedroom with a comfy chair and a good book? CFE bill? Hey, it's only money and cheaper than travel. The evenings outdoors are just beautiful........good time for a real party with a bunch of friends who know how to enjoy life.......right here and now.

We know, at arm's length, of 5 who are moving in direct response to the narco problem. Three have not been able to resist nor relieve the anxiety of elderly parents and/or grown children with regard to safety, one has health problems which are the primary reason but would return here after treatment if it weren't for the escalation hereabouts, and the last is leaving because they just are not suited for expat living anywhere, always complaining and constantly fretful.

With the pull of elderly parents and grandchildren always a factor in returning, the inability to calm those family members and the increasing headline coverage of incidents in Mexico will undoubtedly make it increasingly difficult for people who are here on an 'adventure' so to speak to resist the argument to return. Those would be the people who were not truly invested in a change for life, just a vacation fromthe US.

We have been told by several couples who only winter here that they are missing about half their usual contingent of companions for winter activities. One couple mentioned they have noticed a significant difference in evening seating at resturants. And there is a TON of properties for sale and for rent.

I have been told that you have the best assisted living in Lakeside. You are full? Just when I was getting ready to make a reservation. Seriously, do you have a website with more info? T

Well, if the flight has begun, it is toward the Caribbean. In last 2 years about 20 new casitas were built in my little community and in the last month 5 resale casitas changed hands. Playa del Carmen has a lot of new construction going on too.

The reason for selling range from health to economic to wanting to be closer to the grandkids. I do not know of anyone leaving here because of fear.

Thank you. Only the timid will flee. Most of us expats that moved to Mexico years ago are strong folks and we will weather this out. There are many folks who just cannot cope with Mexican culture, whether they be snowbirds, sunbirds or full-time. I have no problem with them leaving at the first sounds of gunfire. May they return and enjoy their lives in Detroit, Los Angeles, Newark or wherever. T.

I get emails almost every day asking me to come "home". I laughed today, friends who were determined I'd never move here area as determined I'll now come home and buy an RV? They have a nice 5th wheel and they think I should live in one of those, I told them their 35' model is exactly the size of my Mbedroom and bath - I don't think so, but thanks for caring - ha. Plus if I continued my weather station you'd never know where that weather was being reported from - I guess it could be www.weather-wherever.com.

I am on the Caribbean, 1 hour south of Cancun. People from all over the world are still coming to this area of Mexico and this area is still growing. It is amazing how much building has gone on the last 5 years.

I come to Lakeside often and have good friends there. It is a beautiful area to be in.

The economy is the major reason that homes are not selling regardless of the reason they are for sale. When it turns around homes will start selling there again.

In my opinion, the problem in the Lake Chapala area is the size of the inventory. Between what is on the MLS, the listings by non-members and those that are being sold FSBO - it will take a massive influx to even reduce the inventory down to a manageable level. Once that happens, just maybe the remaining inventory will return to values seen in prior years. Stating the obvious? Certainly but I would not want to be in the shoes of those who must make the sale in order to move NOB no matter what the reason is.

Neil

Are you the guy that runs the weather station from Riberas? If so, please publish your website. I used to visit it all the time, but got a new computer and have not been able to find it. I want it on my list of favorites, as it was much better and more accurate than anything else down here. Thanks, T

Wow. What a beautful area to live in and you have been there five years, fulltime? Ido not think I could take the heat and humidity. I have enough trouble with April and May up here, when it gets into the low 90's and humidity is less than 20%.

I agree with you that the economy has been the greatest culprit in the slow housing market, but for the last couple of weeks, we now have other issues up here and lots of folks are taking a "wait and see" attitude toward buying homes, and a very few are bailing out. T

Yep, me and Max the WeatherGato. It's http://www.chapalaweather.net or if you Google "Chapala Weather" etc. it's generally at the top of the list. Looks like we'll probably renew the lease for another year here at the weather station until Summer '12, then who knows, we could be cartelweather.MX?
