I had seen mention of an incident with a fair amount of gunfire lasting less than 30 minutes. Here is a link to a television report:

My Spanish isn't good enough to understand all that is being said.

"Four colonias of the Chapala county seat lived through a night of panic in the area near the bull ring (and others) as they listened to frightening gun battles. The Red Cross was waiting, but they were not informed as to whether there were dead or wounded. Francisco Torres reports, "We had several reports of gun battles, but no reports of injured or dead. Just the gun battles." Local police refused to give any information. "Right now we don't have reports of anyone hurt or killed. Nothing." Nevertheless, in various neighborhoods of Colinas de Chapala, the streets were cordoned off by the municipal authorities. Municipal police were out in patrol cars and on foot. Many were seen walking in the streets with pistols in their hands. On the corner of (La Paz and Y streets), they found an unexploded hand grenade. Another one, also undetonated, was found on Calle La Paz where it crosses with Pípila. The police also found bullet holes on various buildings, which were then protected by the Procuraduría. One of the buildings that was attacked may have been the so-called "safe houses". It seems to have been a confrontation between conflicting gangs of organized crime. In the wee hours of the morning, police were still searching for possible wounded or dead from the gun battles, these frightening events of early Wednesday."

Just like Esperanza said, it happened. I have a friend who lives in that area, who works near my house, and who after work, dropped by, to make a long distance Telmex call to his mother in Baja C. He knows he can do it here for free. (I have a free unlimited long distance national call plan with Telmex and they [his wife and child] only have Telcel [cell phones] and can not phone there for free).

Apparently no one was shot or hurt, but after the fact, one person was arrested. But my friend was the first to admit that he really didn't know much, and all of which he told me, and I posted above, was only hearsay.

A dismembered and beheaded body was found in Jocotepec today with a sign threatening another cartel. According to Twitter posts three people were kidnapped there the night before and conjecture is that this was one of the victims and the person rescued in Chapala is another. No kind of official comment on that part.

Sounds like some nasty business. Wasn't it about this same time last year that there was a bunch of "activity" in Chapala and surrounding areas?

This article confirms that the freed person in Chapala was one of the three kidnapped in Jocotepec and that the body found there was one of the victims. According to the article the battle in Chapala went on for twenty minutes without police intervention.

According to a friend in Jocotopec who knows the parents of the man who was dismembered, the parents own one of the birria restaurants on the plaza of Jocotopec.

Yesterday and today the Jocotopec police are stopping lot of Mexican men in cars who are driving along the carraterra at the spa in San Juan Cosala and using the area in front of the Raquet Club to stop cars.
