Getting Back On Track

This is the time that our snowbirds come down and I know many of you are watching this board.

Although the posts have been a little contencious lately, please don't let that put you off posting a question.

Many of us here are more than willing to answer any question you have. Many did it for us when we first came here and most of us love to return the favor.

There are no silly questions. Big or small, please post your questions and let some of us help you as others helped us.

I guess I have what might be a silly question. It is, why do some of the posters use a alias, refuse to give an address and not want people to know their Email address? I know I wind up with "foot in mouth" many times but I have never felt that I had to hid my name. Maybe I am just more used to making mistakes and admitting it than some others. It seems that to be creditable with answers and opinions one must more open.

I'm with you, Jerry. My parents taught me to stand up for my opinions and to defend them should it become necessary. That entails telling people who I am, and if they have a problem with how I think, they can come to me and say so. Hiding behind anonymity is just another way of being a chickensh_t.

In my opinion.

Now if we could only get more folks to post their pictures. Maybe it's just me, but if I have a face, I feel I can better relate to the person I'm writing to.

But even if I cant see your picture I know you've got to be Okay Gary, because you drive a Porsche :)

Hi, Pete -

My scanner is on the fritz and I'm still shopping for a digital camera, or there would be a photo to go along with the posts. Anyway, I agree that photos add a lot. At present, however, my name, etc., is the best I can do.

I like your website a lot, BTW. Great job with that, and what a beautiful house! You're not too far from Bob Thomas's place, are you?

The 356 had to stay home in the garage today. It rained here in Longview, and that car has never seen a wet road. Those old ones can get rusty if you let them, kind of like its owner. :-)

I am terrible at remembering names (& it's getting worse with age) but great at remembering faces. Maybe that's why I would appreciate a face with each post. I know some people to include a moderator or two who strongly disagree with me. And that's OK

When you said it was raining I thought you were kidding. Just 150 miles north of you it's been sunny and warm all day. But then I heard the weather report.

I guess using an alias goes back to the old days. I started on computers in 1994 and at that time you always used an alias. When I went to use my real name here it was already taken. Also at that time a friend was seriously ill and if you know the background to the name I have chosen you would understand.

Most of us don't like to give out email addresses as the spam problems are getting out of control. You can private message most people. Last year I had my name listed and my email address and someone who took offense to a post of mine spammed my address all over the net. I am still trying to clean up that mess.

good explanation, jean, but would you mind giving us (me, really) a clue as to the origin of Tuatha de Danann?

following the south american format, it would appear that the first name is Tuatha the "de" means you are married to Mr. Danann. or la Sra. Jean de Sutherland (if you are married) is how you would be called in Spanish.

I used to think, "tuatha" is certainly an unusual name! Tried reversing the letters but got zip.

It's the Irish fairies. If you're into fantasy at all you'll run across them. A very magical and exciting bunch. Being part Irish I find them fasinating and in some books a bit frightening, but always beautiful.

Jean/Jeanie went from being the Genie in a bottle to an Irish folklore fairy......certainly a logical progression. It works for me.

Jean -

Fair enough. And thank you for signing your post.

BTW, you may already be aware of this, but if you go to www.refdesk.com, there are links to several spam blockers you can download for free. And refdesk is a great site, you can find just about anything from there.
