Dawg is in his 68th year and will soon be dust so this may not mean anything to me but here goes anyway.

Danny and Gabriella Gyon have come up with a fantastic idea. They have opened a new hamburger and tequila joint on Calle Ocampo behind the Danza del Sol Hotel where they are serving up great hamburgers and cocktails and I´ll tell you this - you should be so lucky as to chow down on one of their fabulous burgers accompanied by a fine glass of top-of-the-line tequila or one of a variety of numerous cocktails they offer before you exit this veil of tears .

They offer several types of delicious burgers but Dawg cannot walk past that India Burger which is to die for.

This place at 178 Ocampo is extraordinary. A burger joint in a garden setting with a huge selection of booze and various cocktails . A find. A treasure. Far and away the best burgers at Lakeside.

And maybe the best thing..... it's just up the street! How did you pull that off?

We will go up and try it out since the other person who lives here is ga-ga over a good burger.

I however will be sorely disappointed not matter how good the burger and cocktail. The bunker-style glass-walled house was PERFECT for an ultra-lounge 60s mid-century mod style place and the Daisy Duke theme is a shame.

But then, if the burger is as great as you say we will eat there, because of that alone. I just won't like the ambiance.

***LOUD BUZZER NOISE***

No, sorry, wrong, incorrect. A Daisy Duke theme is never a shame. Ever.

We went there today. (And NEOhio, after seeing the place, I stand corrected. It really would make an excellent, ultra-cool, mid-century swank lounge.)

Owners are great and it's a nice, comfortable place. The Tuna "burger" was delicious. The American-style burger was tasty, but nothing to really write home about. I'd definitely recommend venturing into the more exotic variations on the burger continuum. SKIP the cajun-seasoned French Fries unless they upgrade to fresh potatoes.....today they were just heavily seasoned, frozen crinkle-cut factory fries.

We didn't avail ourselves of the bar, but it looks like a lot of fun could be had in that department. They even bring out a long drink list of various cocktail concoctions. (I'm guessing somebody here is a Doctor of Mixology.) They even have a list of theme days....one that caught my eye was "Tequila Friday". I think it was $400 MXP for a liter bottle, 4 soft drinks (?), and a Platón of grilled meat and beans and quesadillas.

Definitely strikes me as a good place to get your party on.

Good posts. Yeah, those fries are not as good as they should be. I´ll have to tell Danny. I´m trying to get him to fire up the BBQ grill as Dawg thinks charcoal, especially with some hickory, oak or mesquite smoke takes burgers to a new level of greatness. I have suggested he fire up the BBQ on a trial basis, say, on a Saturday night on the theory that charbroiled burgers will result in his business taking off but We´ll see.

Until then:

DAWG BURGERS
Grind some round or chuck with sufficient fat (quite a bit)in your home grinder or have your butcher do it
Mix lots of smashed garlic into the meat
Using a covered BBQ such as WEBER, heat the charcoal and pour soaked hockory or other wood chips on top of the hot coals Cook thick hamburger patties rare to medium over covered grill enfusing them with the smoke flavor
As the burgers cook place slices of American* or Cheddar cheese on top to start melting
Serve on large burger buns with the best tomatoes you can find, white or yellow onions, hot sweet mustard and mayo
Put on some tart hamburger dill pickles
Serve with bread & butter sliced jalapeños from BUBBA´S BBQ in Riberas on the side. The best jalapeños on earth.
Accompany with some fine Herradura Blanco Tequila or Havana Club aged dark rum

* It is Dawg´s opinion that American cheese was invented specifically for hamburgers just as Julia Child informed us white bread was invented for those BLTs we all love during tomato season.

I must say that Danny and Gabriella are doing all the right things to make this the best hamburger joint and tequila bar at Lakeside ever that would put that famous joint downtown to shame.

Listen to this folks:

A new entree of Baja Shrimp parroting a highly successful sauteed shrimp dish made famous in La Paz, Baja del Sur served at Restaurant Señor Cameron where one gets 1/2 kilo of shrimp sauteed in a special sauce and served with tortilla chips and they gave Dawg a sample and man was it good and, in addition to that, they informed me that this Saturday they will fire up the BBQ grill and BBQ their burgers on the charcoal that afternoon and that promises to be a fabulous treat so go by there about 3:00PM for a great burger and have a bit of Tequila with that burger. No finer treat on the planet.

Sounds good, but what about those mediocre fries? Have they fixed that yet?

Speaking of neighborhood eateries: down the street from us is a mom and pop mini-restaurant called Chimi's, and mom starts the fries with a ....POTATO. Those fries are another whole world from the frozen stuff more places serve. The rest of the food is good, too. Pop, Chimi, spent some years working in CA, so there's an item called a California Omelet that's a lot better than anything I had in said CA. Filled with good stuff and cream cheese; this is a treat. Comes with home fries, made from a POTATO, too. Chimi squeezes the orange juice..from ORANGES.
The food is also very reasonable. 50 pesos will get you the works, and more. Breakfast and lunch only.
Try it sometime. 16 Septiembre .

Danny and Gabriiela´s General Lee on Ocampo behind the Danza Del Sol Hotel just keeps getting better and they are expanding their menu. In the coming weeks they will offer a Baja Burger and Beer combination and fish tacos, shrimp tacos and scallop tacos. They have also started a happy hour from 6:00PM to 7:00PM Monday until Thursday. I still love their "India Burger" and their previously introduced Baja Shrimp is quite good. Their new salmon burger is good but I think they will be improving that sandwich with house made tartar sauce soon. Outstanding place.
