Fishing

Is there much sport fishing nearby to Lake Chapala? I understand the lake is polluted with agricultural runoff and I was thinking of any nearby streams or rivers. Do any of the expatriates swim in the lake? I'm trying to get a feel for day to day activities around Lakeside. Is there anyone who does chi kong?

Thank you all for the information you have already supplied to my posts. I'm getting closer and closer to going SOB.

Is it still possible to live in Chapala or Guadalajara on $1300 a month?

Hello Zorro 13,

I can't answer anything about Lake Chapala except I don't think people swim in the lake or fish there anymore.

But about 3 hours away near Tepic there is a large dam with excellent sport fishing. The reservoir was created about 4 or 5 years ago, is still filling up, but several sport fishing camps have been created around the dam site and offer very reasonable and comfortable accomodations.
Good for weekend trips or a week or so.

Good luck. jerezano.

A single person can live OK on US$1,300/month, but you won't be living real high on the hog.

Well, I'm sitting here at the west end of Lake Chapala watching fishermen ply their trade. There are reports pro and con about pollution in the lake. Locals swim in it. They seem to thrive. I don't like lake swimming if there is a mucky bottom which is the case here. However, some municipalities are putting in sandy beaches for swimmers.

Cost of living: on the west end, in and near Jocotepec and on the southside of the lake, it is much less expensive to live than in the Ajijic area. Rents out this way run from $250/mo to $500/mo for a one or two bedroom place. If you shop local food markets, are in good health, and like to take public transportation, $1300 should be sufficient and still allow for the occasional trip back north.
