The new fish chairs at the Jocotepec malecon are now under construction! The metal frame work is completed and cement & tiling should start soon. Pretty quick for Mexico time...Thanks to all who helped keep the pressure on. "The trouble with life is there's no background music."
The malecón in Jocotepec was recently devastated by the erroneous destruction of several beautiful tile-work chairs--in the shape of fish--that had been commissioned for the renovation of the community area.
The Jocotepec government has allocated funds for the replacement of this art. The government employee who gave the order to destroy the art is apparently on the way to being fired.
Those are beautiful! I was thinking that maybe they were fishING chairs like of deep sea fishing boats, but how? and why? Now I see. Thanks for the visual explanation.
I've only lived here 2 1/2 years and there's a lot about Mexico I don't understand, but I have to say that the story of the destruction of that art is right at the top of the list of head-scratchers. Unfathomable.
if there are folks who still aren't sure what the fish chairs are, here are a couple of pictures of the original ones that are now gone (includes fish fountains, too!):
