Dog needs a new home ASAP

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am posting this for a friend so if you know any way you can find a home for the dog ASAP call Dean or Dave at (387) 761 -0795 or email:
dave_dean(at)sbcglobal(dot)net:

We have a golden retriever that needs a new home. He's middle aged and mellow.
He's perfectly behaved in the house. He doesn't jump on the furniture, beg for
food, or bark. He happily let our Springer spaniel be the alpha dog and he
learned to be gentle with our cat. He was exceptionally handsome, as you can see
in the photo section, before we had a groomer miscommunication last week. He
looks more like a lab now, but he'll grow out again soon, I'm sure.

His handicap is that he's terrified of cohetes and our house in the village is
ground zero for cohetes. He doesn't just hide in the closet like our other dog.
He's been destructive trying to get in and out of the house when we're not here
to the point of injuring himself. When we are at home he's afraid, but he
merely nestles between my chair and the end table for comfort. We can't predict
when there will be cohetes shot off in the neighborhood and the intensity of the
noise here makes our home unsuitable for him.

You may know that this is Sunny's dog, Rudy, and we agreed to foster him while
she's in California for the Summer, but after a discussion we've determined that
the dog either has to be re-homed or put down. His history with fear is the
reason Sunny acquired the dog from another family and may be the reason for his
bad hip. We assume that he managed to escape from his former home and was hit
by a car. We have been treating the hip with an anti-inflammatory and
glucosamine and he seems comfortable, but recently we haven't been able to walk
him because he's not putting weight on the one rear leg.

I'm hoping that someone on Westenders can help us with this sweet heart of a
dog. He really deserves a happy, stress free life.

Don’t put down a good dog . . . Please try one of the Golden Retriever Rescues in Texas. Surely someone can give him a lift to the rescue place. Here is one of many http://grr-tx.com/ Just look up Golden Retriever Rescues USA and I am sure you can find one who will accept him.

I wouldn't put down a dog - it's not mine. I was just posting for some people I know. It looks like they have a date to meet with a woman who might take him in this week.

That is really good to hear. It seems unless this dog does have an exit from Mexico where rockets are commonplace, this dog is doomed to a continuing life of problems. At least NOB those days are usually few and far between. I have rescued Labs for more than 25 years and I can tell you for sure, that is a very difficult problem for a dog to get over . . . . . . if ever. Similar to PTSD in humans. I sure hope all turns out well for Rudy.

He is very sweet otherwise but only does the damage if they are out and the rockets go off. He has done about $3,000 US in damage tearing out sheet metal screens, frame, several sets of screens, pillows, etc. And that doesn't count the antique mesquite shutters and door he tore to pieces. It's hard to imagine he can do this kind of damage when you see him. and his current minders are not the owner - the owner is in Calif. and does not want to spend any more money on him. I hope the other person works out this week.

My rescue lab, on the other hand, is the most well behaved dog on the planet. Yeah right! But she never damaged anything since she was a puppy and put her teeth on a chair rung. I said no and that was the end of it.

There was a recent episode of "Dog Whisperer" where Cesar successfully desensitized a lab of this phobia. Sorry I cannot give the program number or more specific info on how to find it.

It' a sad state of affairs when the owner is in California "and doesn't want to spend any more money on him". . . the owner should have thought a little more about the responsibilities of having a dog in the first place. Maybe if the owners child had the same problem, the owner would be the same kind of parent! I hope she never gets the opportunity to have another dog again. JMHO

I agree completely. And she saddled someone else with her problem and now has had enough. I didn't approve of the whole thing - thought she should have gotten a house sitter to take care of the dog at her home - large gated property where the dog did not have problems.
