Dental work with anesthesia

Can't Post | Private Reply
Does anyone know of a dentist or clinic that will put you under to do a bunch of dental work at once? We're coming down for a few months this winter and I was considering having some major dental work done but I'm a huge chicken. I've done this in Canda before (had work done under anesthetic) and the experience was far nicer than being awake.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have. I don't know the exact nature of the work yet, but would include a few caps, likely some fillings, major cleaning and whatever else is going on in my mouth that I don't know about because I'm scared of the dentist :)

Beverley, as I sit here due East of Victoria, BC listening to CIOC 98.5 FM (the Ocean) In WA. I too have to think about the dentist. There are dentists in the Ajijic area that many people swear by but others swear at. I have been witness to so many arguments about which Dentist is good and which is bad, that I am even more confused than I was before I started asking my friends who was good and who was bad.

I've heard some real horror stories, probably embellished by the story teller. I say story teller because some of the things that told had to be exaggerations of the truth.

The one dentist I keep on hearing more good about than bad is in Chapala PAUSE. I went to see if I could find his name. I thought I had it here with me when I started writing this reply. Well I couldn't find it. BUt since I typed this I will send it anyway hoping someone else can fill in the blanks

You know, Pete, I have forgotten where we were going with this.. I am definitely not a dentist, a profession with a high suicide rate. I do have a great dentist in Riberas which I would recommend in a nanosecond if I could remember her name.

I do feel sorry for Beverley (from Vancouver) who posted a simple question about the best dentist to go to, we never did answer her question.

What I can say, Beverley, is that I still have 98.5 FM the Ocean on in the background (Victoria BC). What relaxing music they play and without many commercials.

What's even greater about this station is that when you move to the shores of Lake Chapala, you can still listen to it and most of your favorite stations from the lower mainland on a Star Choice satellite receiver. The last time I checked there were more than 750 Star Choice Receivers Lakeside. That # may be approaching 1,000 by now. Simply turn to (audio) channel 844 and there it is.

I'm not quite sure what this has to do about your question about dentistry, but I thought you would want to know. It is real funny though sitting at your home on the shores of Ajijic listening to AM 690 and hearing the announcer talking about the traffic backup on the Lions Gate Bridge (Channel 836 on Star Choice)

Bubba, you answer would have been fine in the Free for All forum, but lacked any redeaming qualities in this forum. The moderator was correct in removing it from view.

In response to your questions:

(1) The "Reverend" is losing his mind. That is a possibility, but I suspect not having your spouce at home, and too much to drink are to blame.

(2) Rolly is in a bad mood. No Rolly did his job as he should have.

(3) The Reverend overstepped the bounds of good taste which is entirely possible. Not sure about the "Reverend" but BUBBA definitely overstepped the bounds of good taste.

(4) - (8) again these should be on the Free for All Forum, they were only minutely humerous and defintely don't apply to the subject of this thread.

Bubba you have the knowledge and intelligence to post insightful answers to questions, unfortunately all too frequently you post responses that need be removed.

Folks, I can appreciate your need to chit-chat and go off on creative tangents, but when you're doing so in response to a query seeking straight information, please change your subject lines to OFF-TOPIC or something to warn the unwary so that the original poster doesn't have to slog through irrelevant conversations. Otherwise, my only alternative is to delete the noise.

I got a couple of private posts jumping on me about my comment to lighten up. Sorry if I upset you all. I've been the brunt of it too, and took it all with a grain of salt which I'm pretty sure I was intended to. Life's too short to get too "up in the air" about anything. At least it is for me. If you think someone is offended couldn't you merely say that Bubba or whoever is "twisting your tail" and give the the real "low down"?

That's it. Patty in Dr. Haro's office. She has done excellent work for me.

I have been rightfully admonished by Rolly for my rude behavior and HHerrington's earlier post is very insightful. I need one of those dexterity devices that refuses me access to the computer after a couple of margaritas.

Excuse me but that was Dr. Patty. Unlike most dentist's offices with muzac, she plays really cool jazz in her office and will turn up the volume if you so request.

I can't speak to that since I have not had need of anesthesia as yet. However, their office is extremely modern. Dr. Haro was trained at the Univ. of Maryland I believe. You might want to call and ask him. He speaks excellent English.

Beverley, just south of you is a well known Dental surgeon who regularly performs extractions and other rather major types of dental surgery. I showed him your post. He snorted and commented that there is a very good reason why dentists in both the US and Canada, would not do as you requested, but suggested that if you went far enough south you could have any type of surgery performed be it safe or not.

He suggested a much simpler, safer and more economical solution. Surgery in the open mouth can be pretty intimidating especially when one can hear the grinding etc. Not only does he prescribe medication for the pain and swelling but he also prescribes calming medication like high dosages of Valium a day before the surgery (I think it was the day before).

It sure worked for me.

I take your point about the valium. It may well relax me enough. And it would certainly be cheaper! A very reputable dentist does it for me here -- he hires a licensed anesthesiologist who brings portable equipment into the dental offices and they make me stay in their recovery room on site for most of the day. The cost of being put out is $300 per hour and it is a minimum of 2 hours. It can get pretty expensive.

Pete,

Did your dentist friend explain the reason why he would not use a general anesthetic? I once had a difficult tooth extraction for which the dentist gave me a general via an intravenous injection. It was a great way to go. I woke up within a couple of minutes of the end of the procedure. I was a bit groggy and not able to drive right away; I was completely over the drug in about an hour.

Beverley:

So if they will put you under, then maybe it's not quite as dangerous as my neighbor alluded to. Or maybe they never put you all the way under. Many of us who are over 50 regularly have tubes stuck into us from both ends. I know I receive anesthesia, I never remember anything after the procedure, but I am told I was never unconscious, which I guess is the dangerous part of this, but just so high or whatever they call it that I don't remember any of the unpleasant procedures

Maybe! The high level of valium dental appointment sounds similar, only cheaper :)

Maybe your dental friend was afraid an unqualified persson was doing the "putting under".

Rolly: What I understand is that if you are put totally out that there is some danger involved. That's especially so with us older folks. We should avoid the risk of being put under; some will not survive.

To re-enforce what I had just written I just phoned another friend, a retired MD. He stated the same thing. Anesthesia is dangerous. It can kill you, especially if you are older. He said don't take unnecessary chances with your life, unless the rewards exceed the danger. He further commented that most dentists are not properly trained in the use of Anesthesia, and that such procedures can be vary dangerous. (It sounds like Beverley's dentist did have an anesthesiaologist present).

He too suggested the medications to take away this fear are far less dangerous than going under.

My medical training? Almost none. I have an expired advanced first aid card I got some 30 years ago when a member of the Ski patrol. I'm just quoting what others with much more expertise than I have said.
