Cellular Phones & Internet Access

Hello everyone :)

What do snowbirds do for cell phones down there? I just checked but my Fido account won't work there because I dont have the right model of phone... but it would probably be expensive anyway. Is it possible to rent local area cell phones for three or four months?

And is it easy enough to get local internet service for 3 - 4 months? Is the broadband that is available just in the centers of towns? (We aren't set up for wireless at all.)

Thanks for any help you can give me. Are there lots of internet cafe's as well?

We're planning to come down this December to rent for three months (driving).... really looking forward to it :)

Best Regards/Beverley Wood

Hi, I have three old cell phones in Mexico for when we have guests. They can be activated at the local cell phone place. For $14.00 we get the phone activated with $10.00 worth of calling time on the phone - just right for when guests go on day trips so they can keep in touch, call in emergencies, call when they are lost, etc. You could do the same thing with your present cell phone or an obsolete one that you have in the US. If you have a couple of different ones, bring them down in case one or the other can't be activated. We use up the extra minutes when they're gone: the minutes usually last something like 3 or 4 months and then they -- and the number -- expire if there's no more activity.

re internet access, just walk into Laguna, upstairs from the Cafe Internet Ajijic and they'll have you "live" in minutes. Short term dial up is $20/month. Their website is laguna.com.mx
