Bugs and Scorpions

Time to clear out the critters. Some posts have said you can buy the same chemicals as the pros and apply them yourself. How difficult is this? What chemicals? Where do I get them?

Any information gladly appreciated.

I will suggest to buy "CINOFF" you can buy it at Galvez hardware, youput it a bottle of a litre of water, shake it well and spray it all over betweeb the wall and the tile of your place, even indoors or outdoors, and wait for moping for at least 2 days... this works pretty good (of corse you will get tired). try to finish the whole bottle in one application.. and keep doing it once a mounth (good exercise).. that works pretty good.... in addition you can use to clean the floors "Ajax con expel", it has a little bit of poisson for bugs, but is harmless to pets and people.. good luck!

We also used the same product at Jura and found it to be excellent. Once a year right after the rainy season we have the exterminator come in and do the whole outside yard and house and the rest of the year use the Cynoff.

Another things that really helps with bugs is having some lizards? geckos? in the yard. We have dozens of the little guys and they also do a good job.

If dilligent you should never experience a problem.

We have the exterminator on a regular basis but had a "weird" attack? of three or four scorpions this past month. No one got stung but the terrier pup actually caught one! and came away unscathed! When the eterminator came it turned out they came in with all the potted pointsettias Harry had in the house for Xmas! They found a whole bunch more in the pots! So out they all went and so far no more scorpion sightings. Miss Mordida is p*ssed no more bugs to catch <G>

Oh oh...

There are scorpions Lakeside....What else do you have there... My wife is going to freak when she hears this and may put an end to our thoughts of going there next year....I thought this was supposed to be paradise...We have a Yorkshire Terrier and my wife thinks of it as her baby...If it caught a scorpion and delivered it to my wife for inspection, the screams would be heard back in Canada...

If there are other little creatures, please don't tell my wife.

Yep, scorpions and spiders, even.... but for someone coming from a country where they have wolves and polar bears, I would think that a little scorpion would be a piece of cake for you. :)

Yep... been there a few times, flown over it many more. I was really surprised to see so many people there. I thought they had all moved to the Hollywood. :) I guess my feeble attempt at humor failed. My intent was to imply that fear of scorpions is about as valid as fear of polar bears, for the average Joe.

ah now i get it -but you used the wrong analogy-should have said rats maybe-but here in alberta we have no fear of those-our ever vigilant border rat patrol keeps us totally rat free from the wee beasties who lurk in the wilds of saskatchewan ,british columbia and montana.

but guess what-we have scorpions.

Well I've seen one scorp and one roach since arriving. But I've never seen just one mosquito or one blackfly in the old country. One swarm maybe!!!! Leave those citronella candles at home folks.

I see Scorpions once every month or so in upper Ajijic. My gardener collects them and takes them home. I'm afraid to ask what he does with them. Hey I used to be scared of them and one Easter Saturday I ran out on the porch in my stocking feet and was stung by one that I stepped on. Let me tell you I panicked and ran to the local clinic.

They had to give me medication to lower my blood pressure. I later learned that they gave me the medication not because of the scorpion sting, but because I was in such a panic.

I just watched a National Geographic TV special (Sun. evening EST 7pm) about scorpions in Leon, MEx and a venom antidote being tested on Arizonza USA scorpion sting victims. Apparenty, physicians in Leon have deveoped a serum that combats the lethal effects of the sting. TV showed the very unfortuante death of a young Mexican irl in a small village outside Leo, due to a sting.

Anyway, are there some issues with scorpions in the Chapala area and are there effective ways to deal with them? It appears that it is something that one should not be cavalier with. Thanks.

I'm no scorpion expert and can only pass on to you what us old farts say when sitting around shooting the bull. Here goes. This sounds flippant and I don't mean it to be. Occasionally a bee sting will kill a person. But those of us who have lived around bees don't worry about what might happen. When I first got down here I was very worried about all of the scorpions. Now I don't think about them. The time I stepped on one and was stung, I went to the clinic, thinking something terrible might happen. It didn't. I guess what I would do if I were worried is visit the local doctor the next time you are down here and get some real advise. He charges 200 pesos per visit.

I understand that some people keep some type of injectable medication around in case of a scorpion bite. I know some people who are allergic to bees also keep injectable medication.

Sorry I can't be of greater help

Here in Chapala all the clinics (private and public) have the serum for the scorpion´s sting, the thing is that the serum can be worst thant the stung itself?? why?? because is easier to be allergic to the serum, than to the sting, Here what they recomend is to take an "Avapena" (ant-allergical pill) and stay calm, if you fell worst, you go to the clinic to get the serum, if you fell better there´s no need for anything else and is just like the sting of a big (very big) bee, and it will be gone...
