Hello, I don't live in Ajijic. Nor in Chapala, nor in Jocotepec? Nor in any other village or town around Lake Chapala. I live in the mountains near Zacatecas City. Nevertheless, I have visited the Lake Chapala area at least 10 to 15 times, first visit way back in the 1950's. Latest in 2011. I have friends who live in Ajijic. Some of whom want to move to San Cristóbal, others who have moved to Acapulco, others to Patzcuaro, etc. All, including me, say life there in Ajijic was or is enjoyable and they are happy to have made the choice to live there. I would say that anywhere on the Lake would be enjoyable. Ajijic happens to be the most sophisticated area, having started way back in the 1950's as a hippie and artist retreat. As you go west around the lake and start back around the east end, life becomes more basic and primitive and of course cheaper. But the weather doesn't seem to change much. Perhaps long time residents there can tell a difference, but to a visitor, no. Ajijic has better restaurants, shopping, etc but of course is more costly. Quiet! I have some friends who lived in a gated complex in a quiet area of Ajijic for several years and then moved a year or so ago because of an annual church festival next door which they found intolerable for the novena (9 days.) They now live downtown four houses from the semaphore in the exact center of town along the main highway and because of the construction of the house find it quiet and much more enjoyable. Also rent is cheaper. Very happy. And being so close to the Lake Chapala Society club they can mingle with other gringos as much or as little as they want. Also close to restaurants, stores, not Walmart but mom-and-pop type , and the main pier and promenade in Ajijic. no problems with walking which is important to the husband who has had a hip replacement, etc. The other side of the semaphore is all up hill to the mountain side. Some spectacular B&B's up there. I know nothing about your financial plans. However I have found the La Estancia hotel (about 20 rooms and restaurant) to be quite reasonable in cost, centrally located on the main drag from the semaphore to the lake (pier and promenade about 3 or 4 blocks), close to restaurants, etc. But no parking (parking on the side streets is available but no watchman.I particularly like the restaurant and the owner. Unfortunately they do not have a website and they do require a deposit for reservations. Lots of B&B's available on the web. All about $85 usd a day or so. Beyond the semaphore (approaching from the Guadalajara airport) about 1 or 2 blocks on the left is a very quiet, clean, motel with parking in front of the rooms. Watchman and office at the entrance. Very reasonable. Not on the web either. No restaurant but good and cheap restaurants nearby. Have fun, Go anytime. Whether dry, rainy, cold or what, nothing is extreme (except the prices in some restaurants) As ever jerezano
