Best month to visit Ajijic?

  | Private Reply
Hola! My wife and I are visiting Ajijic next spring to see if it's a possible retirement destination. Neither of us enjoy extreme heat (relative term, I know) and I am thinking if we lived there, we'd get used to it and maybe even take off during the hottest months to visit family & friends back home. My question is: what month would be best to visit? February? March? We'd like to visit for 3 weeks, staying at a quite hotel for a few days and then rent a house for the rest of our visit. Any suggestions much appreciated. Gracias.

With February and March, you are talking the dry (dusty) hot part of the year. It might be beneficial in your research to check out:
http://chapalaweather.net/

Near the bottom of the page, you will note a "rainfall chart" - rain = cooler weather. At he very bottom of the page, you can access the annual daily data charts 2009 - 2011.

Yes, April, May and first part of June are hottest and dry, Feb/Mar aren't too bad, Jul through Sept, cloudy, rainy now and then, but beautiful green, Dec/Jan/Feb chilly. Depending on where you're from, our hot is a high of 92 this year, cold was 42 for a short time one morning, mostly moderate. The snowbirds are here from Oct-Mar, so a bit more traffic and less houses for rent, but usually you can find something available short term.

There are almost NO extremes in Ajijic. Pick the worst suggested time to visit if you want to challenge your tolerance level

Thanks all. I have researched the weather (great site, Steve) and I realize the early part of the year is dry, then it rains, then it's green and gets a bit colder, and the cycle starts anew. My wife has to book her holidays by Oct 3. I tend to agree with Sparks, but we were hoping to come sometime in Jan/Feb/Mar.

Thanks so much. March it is, then. We have a map of Ajijic/Chapala on our hall wall and are trying to figure out the parameters of the downtown/noisy area. We'd like to spend a few nights there and then move on to a quiet non-gated neighbourhood. I'm seeing the few hotels are quite spread out. Downtown looks like it extends west maybe to the Plaza Ajijic and then east to the (gulp) Walmart?

I have and it's fantastic. Without being there, however, it's difficult to know exactly where things begin and end, eg. where does it begin to become residential?

Have you tried Google Street View? The main roads are covered and quite a few of the side streets are covered. You will find the residential districts scattered everywhere and the business districts scattered in between. Not much in the way of zoning like NOB.

I'd also add that the 'better' rentals go for several months - the entire high season. You will find slim pickings if you are planning to arrive in march, stay in a B&B for a week, while you look for a 2 week rental.

Suggestion: consider a well located and (possibly) overpriced rental from VRBO.com for the entire 3 weeks of your visit.

Noise varies from street to street, block to block and house to house.

Come and stay at a B&B (there are several lovely ones here); then you can personally check out house that suits you best, since noise is your issue. However, others are right: Nov thru Mar. is the HIGH season and availability may be limited. You may be able to work out a decent 3 week rate at one of the following B&Bs.

B&B's I would rate as quiet are:
Estrellita's
Casa del Sol
La Paloma

One's that are near live music venues are:
Villa Eucalyptus
Adobe Walls

I've either stayed at, or have good friends who have stayed at the B&Bs listed above. Other posters may have other recommendations.

The fiesta season is over in February so you won't experience a lot of noise. The "downtown area" (remember this is a small village) is roughly from the Careterra to the lake between Aquiles Serdan and Javier Mina. You'll notice that below Ocampo/Constitution the street names change, likewise east and west of Colon.

I agree with the above B&B suggestions. There is also the Nueva Posada (has a website) which is a very nice full service hotel right on the lake. Very nice; centrally located; close to downtown Ajijic.

The arrangement of businesses, homes and restaurants is somewhat "random" in central Ajijic. On my street, there are restaurants, B &B's, little houses, large walled estates, art galleries, small businesses...........you name it. I love it.
Others prefer the strictly residential areas. Plenty of those, too.

I think February/early March would be a good time to visit. Goldilocks weather. Enjoy.

Nueva Posada is beautiful and nicely run; however, it is across the street from La Tasca, which in Feb. has live music 3 or 4 nights a week. If it's accoustic it's ok, but if it's Tall Boys or other loud group, it rocks the Nueva Posada until it's over. Friends of ours stayed at Adobe Inn and that's a block farther away from Tasca than the Posada, and they were quite bothered by the music.

I only mention this because the original poster wants a quiet place.

When we stayed there........a few years ago during our house remodel, it was quiet. You're right, however, when La Tasca starts rocking, it would be a different story.

Okay, back to the original suggestions.

February or March should be beautiful, although you will miss the verdant green of the summer and early fall. The weather will be cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons, then cool again in the evening. Kind of like what they used to call "Indian Summer" back east in the US.

While you seem to be set on a winter/early spring timeline, I'd like to make a pitch, possibly for a future visit, that you come in the September-November period. This is when the vast majority of fiestas happen. I know, I know, it gets bit noisy, especially if you are very close to the plaza. Many of the folks who live here have gotten a bit jaded, but for newcomers it's a wonderful experience. The events are great fun and unlike virtually anything you are used to back home. You really get a feel of Mexican society with Independencia, Day of the Dead, Virgin of Guadalupe Day, Revolution Day, San Andrés Patron Saint's Day, etc. etc. In Feb/March there is little or nothing like it.

As I say, think about it for a future visit. Whenever you do visit, try to make sure your room is as far back from the street as you can manage. The structures in Mexican towns typically do not have front yards, but are built right up to the very narrow sidewalks, with the street only a couple of feet away. Buses and cars with boomboxes will rattle your teeth if you have a room that fronts on the street.

Agreed. October is my favorite month. The rains have mostly subsided, it is green and the temp is comfortable. The spring is nice too although brown and dusty.

We have a question about the noise issue.............
Do you have a lot of the church bell rigning with attendant fireworks/rockets during the time of the festivals?
Thanks for any info!

Thank you all so much for your information - it is very helpful. We would like to visit in the fall, but it wouldn't be until next year (holidays already booked for this fall) and I'm not sure we can wait that long to visit Ajijic. Reading all about it sounds like paradise with few drawbacks. We have just 4 years until (early) retirement so will need to explore all what we can. Personally, I love Barra de Navidad but the temperatures during the summer can be unbearable (today is 31, "feels like" 38.)

Since you have 4 years I would suggest that you make several exploratory trips to the area at different times of the year. Each visit you could possibly stay in a different village along the lake (Chapala, Ajijic, San Juan Cosala, etc.). I recommend renting a house or apartment and staying as long as you can each visit to get a real flavor of what it will be like to be actually living at the lake and being away from your current life..........

There are several sites to find rentals. I have used VRBO.com and Rentallocatorsmx. com

Good luck.

if you think this is paradise, then you will be grossly disappointed. only real estate agents and outfits like AARP use that term on a regular basis.
having said that, i'm gonna croak here with my boots on.
since you have lots of time,do your due diligence by first establishing your criteria and then seeing how this place fits your wants and needs. DO NOT rely solely on these web boards as tempting as that may be.
we bought our house here in the first week of moving and have lived in it for 5 1/2 years and that ain't a smart idea for MOST people.
my wife just got back from a trip and just told a friend that this is home for sure now and will even stay if i croak before her.

Hello,

I don't live in Ajijic. Nor in Chapala, nor in Jocotepec? Nor in any other village or town around Lake Chapala. I live in the mountains near Zacatecas City.

Nevertheless, I have visited the Lake Chapala area at least 10 to 15 times, first visit way back in the 1950's. Latest in 2011. I have friends who live in Ajijic. Some of whom want to move to San Cristóbal, others who have moved to Acapulco, others to Patzcuaro, etc. All, including me, say life there in Ajijic was or is enjoyable and they are happy to have made the choice to live there.

I would say that anywhere on the Lake would be enjoyable. Ajijic happens to be the most sophisticated area, having started way back in the 1950's as a hippie and artist retreat. As you go west around the lake and start back around the east end, life becomes more basic and primitive and of course cheaper. But the weather doesn't seem to change much. Perhaps long time residents there can tell a difference, but to a visitor, no.

Ajijic has better restaurants, shopping, etc but of course is more costly.

Quiet! I have some friends who lived in a gated complex in a quiet area of Ajijic for several years and then moved a year or so ago because of an annual church festival next door which they found intolerable for the novena (9 days.) They now live downtown four houses from the semaphore in the exact center of town along the main highway and because of the construction of the house find it quiet and much more enjoyable. Also rent is cheaper. Very happy. And being so close to the Lake Chapala Society club they can mingle with other gringos as much or as little as they want. Also close to restaurants, stores, not Walmart but mom-and-pop type , and the main pier and promenade in Ajijic. no problems with walking which is important to the husband who has had a hip replacement, etc. The other side of the semaphore is all up hill to the mountain side. Some spectacular B&B's up there.

I know nothing about your financial plans. However I have found the La Estancia hotel (about 20 rooms and restaurant) to be quite reasonable in cost, centrally located on the main drag from the semaphore to the lake (pier and promenade about 3 or 4 blocks), close to restaurants, etc. But no parking (parking on the side streets is available but no watchman.I particularly like the restaurant and the owner. Unfortunately they do not have a website and they do require a deposit for reservations. Lots of B&B's available on the web. All about $85 usd a day or so.

Beyond the semaphore (approaching from the Guadalajara airport) about 1 or 2 blocks on the left is a very quiet, clean, motel with parking in front of the rooms. Watchman and office at the entrance. Very reasonable. Not on the web either. No restaurant but good and cheap restaurants nearby.

Have fun, Go anytime. Whether dry, rainy, cold or what, nothing is extreme (except the prices in some restaurants)

As ever jerezano
