Best Place to Move to in Mexico?

Hola all,

First a little back-story. I lived in Cancun and Manzanillo working for a tour operator when I was 23 yrs old. 15 years, a failed marriage, and a diagnoses of Multiple Sclerosis later I am back to my "mexican" roots, searching for the place that I should be. I lived in Cancun this past winter for 4 months and did a little work for a friend that lives there. Cancun was a "safe" choice for me because I have old friends and felt a network of support. My MS has been pretty much in remission, but with this illness that could always change. Healthcare facilities nearby would be important to me just in case. During my time in Cancun I went to Mexico City to see an old friend of mine. We spent a wonderful week together and are now in touch and planning a future. Whether that will materialize or not is up for much speculation ;), but it is a nice addition to my life right now.

Thats my bio, in short. I am planning on coming back in November for 4-5 months (maybe more) but thinking of an alternative to Cancun. It would be nice to be within closer proximity to Mexico City so my boyfriend and I could spend more time together. I don't need it to be on top of it though. His family owns and flys for a local airline so I could get back there for weekends etc. once in a while, and of course I love the first class buses! I am really searching for somewhere that there would be a community and possibility of some type of work. I have an income of over $1300 a month on Social Security Disability but would like to have something to do with my time. I have to be somewhat careful of the heat as that can tend to drain me more than the average bear. I am 39 years old so younger than many of the retirees. However, even with my comparatively younger age, I do lack the energy I used to have and live a very quiet laid back life.

I would love to get your input and thoughts on this decision. I have been reading about Chapala and surrounding areas. Would I be left out there because of my age? Or could I become a useful member of the community??

Thanks so much for the benefit of your community of wisdom!

I am considering a visit to the Chapala area in early June. Are there people to contact and things to read before I get there. What I would like to do is just spend a few days and see if the area might be the right place for me.

Gracias,

Mexconnect contains a ton of articles and info that you can research. Also enter ajijic in Google and you'll find another raft of info on this area. You will also find good B&B's to stay at.

Mexconnect is a great source of information, and you can search on any topic of particular interest. Another source is the book Choose Mexico by John Howells and Don Merwin, which discusses the pros and cons of many areas in Mexico (from a gringo perspective, not sure that fits for a mexigrl).

I'm sold on the Ajijic/Lake Chapala area, but with your sensitivity to heat you might want to also consider Morelia, or even Patzcuaro. Both are higher elevation than the Lake Chapala area, which means cooler, best I can tell both summer and winter. We are in the hottest time of year Lakeside right now, and have had high temperatures between 85 and 90F for about a month, though the low humidity keeps the comfort index pretty good.

There are plenty of things to keep you busy Lakeside; see for example the Lake Chapala Society Calendar on-line. And while there are lots of us who show silver threads among the gold (or vice versa), many of us are relatively high achievers and relatively high energy. Though a siesta feels good mid-afternoon, we're pretty active at other times.
