Hi Dish, We all have our pet peeves and few besides myself are totally honest, physically beautiful and perfect, intelligent and witty beyond the scope of what could normally be expected as a result of the benefits of a wealthy and privileged upbringing, and worthy of being deferred to as the master of all knowledge and arbiter of what should be presented to the hoi polloi out there in computer land. I definitely share your perception that many who post on these fora have no real clue about what your personal reality of Mexico is all about, but that may be one of the points of this entire enterprise. Someone who has been here at least as long as you have and is probably more fully integrated into the culture and society (I can't say for sure since you're basically anonymous and all we have to go on is the info you choose to pass on to us) read some of my impressions of life down here and told me that they were surprised that MY Mexico was so different from THEIR Mexico. Others with less time and experience in country have said nearly the same to me, and I to them. That's a major point. Not everyone wants to come here to follow your plan, or mine, or anyone else's. And not everyone should be forced to live according to someone else's idea of what's acceptable. About the most we should require of others is that they obey the legal guidelines of whatever country they're in, cause no harm to others, not be a financial burden to the general populace, and decide how they individually choose to integrate into various aspects of their chosen community, or not. I personally feel no obligation to come to Mexico as a missionary or social reformer, Big Daddy to the less affluent, or B'wana to the underclass. I didn't do it in Texas and I won't condescend to the folks down here. Many of us have our private and personal interests that involve helping certain groups or folks but those activities shouldn't be required of those who choose a differing path. No, I don't agree with a lot of things I read on these fora, and in the past I've answered to "correct" a lot what I perceived to be misinformation, but as you should know we live in a country (actually WORLD) of shifting realities and what applies today in one place may or may not be totally invalid tomorrow or in another place. I particularly disagree with some of the comments you make from time to time but I understand (or think I do) where some of your attitudes come from. There's a certain group who came to Mexico when it was cheap, uncrowded by foreigners, easily exploitable, and where they could live on savings or investments as either HUGE ducks in a very small pond or as unfettered rebellious adventurers surviving on a few hustled pesos and a bit of charm and guile. Nothing wrong with either as long as they don't come back years later with rosy fading memories of what wonders they performed for "the people" back before the invasion of the undesirables, and start bemoaning the demise of the "real" Mexico, totally denying the locals the benefits of societal and financial progress. At any rate, if you'll follow things closely you'll see that a lot of "experts" post in cycles. They'll hit from the fringes for a few weeks and then be gone forever. It's a tribute to this site and to many of the participants, that enough information is printed here that many who have never visited the country can write descriptive passages and offer specific directions as though they had years of experience down here. And I think you underestimate the majority of the participants here. You should notice that there are quite a few who correct erroneous postings. It's up to the individual to decide which version of a story they choose, but everyone is entitled to offer an opinion or a personal viewpoint. Like you, I still occasionally get enough and need to vent a bit, but I expect that the same applies to me; some believe what I have to say and agree with my conclusions, and some don't. Wouldn't it be dull otherwise? I'll e-mail you offline when I get home next week and maybe we can get together over coffee or lunch somewhere and talk. I get more good info and make more friends that way! And lessen my chances of heart attack, stroke, and constipation. And the folks with whom I disagree are usually the most interesting and entertaing to talk with. And the "poor fellow in the suit" evidently has found a hobby: posting on the fora! Gotta go feed the cat. UD Shameless self-promotion: http://www.headformexico.com
