Arizona Car Registration

I have a recololection that Arizona allows a non resident to register a car without an inspection. Their motor vehicle website hints at this, but without giving any information. I have Texas plates on this car now, but will not be able to reregister it.

I currently live in Arizona,,, moving to Ajijic April 1. I'm not sure if you realize how much license plates cost in AZ. I pay $300/year. Someone on this Forum told me that once we get into Mexico and our plates expire, that we do not have to renew them,,, as long as we have our Visa, then the vehicle is legal in Mexico. If you're still interested, I'd be happy to find out more info regarding the non-resident registration for you.

Hi Steve,

While you are living in Mexico with an FM3, you are not required to have current car registration in the US. You are required to have plates on the car, but the authorities here don't care about the status of your registration. Many of us who live in Mexico full-time do not have current registration in the US, nor do we maintain car insurance there.

If you have need to drive back to Texas, you can get a transit permit that gives you some days (30, I think) to drive on your expired plates. You can also get trip insurance to cover you in the US.

There have been a large number of posts on the subject of cars from Texas. You might want the click on Search Posts and enter Texas.

BTW, is this the same car that was dieing/dead a few months ago? Got it fixed in Mexico?

Rolly, where would you purchase this transit permit and trip insurance? In Mexico? Would you happen to know the cost of this?

Thanks Linda

You can buy the permit at the Texas DMV at any border crossing town where there is a DMV office -- surely El Paso, Ladero, Brownsville, and probably others. You can buy insurance on the US side. I don't know if you can get it in Mexico or on-line. I don't know the cost of the permit; I haven't done it yet.

I was able to get US and Canada car insurance here in Mexico at Lloyds. Also, my other car insurance agency also offered it. I had to order it at least 1 month ahead of time and it will cover me for 60 days outside of Mexico for $116 US. It will only cover me for liability.

Drvers License Links Site for All States

Although drivers licenses is a little off subject, I have found this to be a very useful site for drivers license information for people living out of state. Some states let you download forms and do various tasks on line:

It looks like we would have to keep our us insurance as we would be traveling in a motor home and pulling a car. AT least at first, until we bought a home. Are their a lot of people traveling and living in mh's around that area? Does anyone have any information on rv parks?. locations and prices? Maybe even a link?

Thanks Linda

Re RV Parks- There is (was) a very nice RV park named PAL in San Antonio, right before you get to Ajijic. I stayed there last year; pulled my Jeep down behind a 37' motorhome. I used the was as they are trying to sell small casitas in there and have limitrf the space where RV's are allowd. Have friends there now who are afraid they may get moved out! The spaces they intend to have RVs are pretty full with some overflow in the supposedly restricted area! I left the mh in Texas and drove the jeep, rented a house which seems to be working out pretty well. Of course if you want to travel around you gotta bring the unit.

Thanks Bob, I was emailing with a lady that is selling her casita at Pal. You can't buy the property, just the casita. We do want to travel some around the states also. We'll probably rent or lease a casita or maybe even an apartment too.

It was a really a great RV park, very enjoyable place, terriffic pool etc. As for the casitas, how smart do you have to be to buy a small house and not own the property it was built on? Guess they adhere to the old saying "there's a sucker born every minute". Send me an Email privately and I'll tell you a little more! Personally I think there are some pretty good RE opportunities here now!
