Any need for a computer repair guy in the area?

Can't Post |
Hello,

I am planning on moving to Mexico sometime in the next 12-18 months and I am finally getting close to deciding what area I want to move to. The Lake Chapala area is one that I am considering, if the real estate prices don't keep going up to where it cost less for a home in California!

Anyway, this post is to see if your area has any need for a person who does computer repairs. This is what I have been doing for years and years and I don't think I could ever stop working on computers. I do not know what it takes to start a business in Mexico but I would prefer to keep the work kind of like a "services offered" status and not have an actual storefront. My hope is to not get deep into a business but maybe do occasional work as folks need it around the area. Kind of a part-time venture.

I keep reading that computer parts and repairs are tough to get around certain areas of Mexico and this is what I specialize in. I am extremely unfamiliar with what it would take to bring in parts. But I have many many connections and companies I have been dealing with for years out of Southern California that would be glad to keep my business even at a reduced volumn. So if anyone can let me know if this is a type of service your area needs I would greatly appreciate it. I would also accept any input/advice/warnings on what it takes to bring in parts to Mexico now days.

Thanks,

Jon

There is always a need for a good computer repair guy. Right now there are some pretty good ones, and those who would be the first to admit that they are not experts, but because of the shortage of qualified personnel are in demand.

Right now there is a big need for on site Mac repair people. Sure they are available in Guadalajara, and the folks from Guadalajara come to the lake like about once per week.

There is also a shortage of those personnel who are good at networking. We have two popular types of broadband; ADSL and fixed wireless (802.11b) Often these installations need tweaking. Other times the user wants to network the ISP connection with a second computer.

Yep. If you are good, you will be in demand. If you are good we need you.

Thanks for the input. I am not a networking specialist, but I have setup many small networks for homes and businesses, never more than 7 computers at once though. As far as sharing Internet, that's the easiest to setup unless the people are still on Windows 95 or NT 4.0. Then getting the proper drivers for current technology becomes a problem, especially on wireless. My area of specialty is fixing or upgrading computers. This can be anything from virus removal to hardware replacement/upgrades.

Many years ago I used to teach classes on basic computer use and Internet and up to about 1 year ago I used to be a guest speaker here at UNLV speaking about the Internet. Internet marketing and how to adjust or design a website to be marketing friendly.

But like I mentioned before, I am not looking to setup a full time business. I would just like to know there is still things I can do and I like to help people from getting "taken" by "overcharging" or "garage-taught" technicians.

Thanks again for your input.

Jon
