Another Lakeside Mini-cam

Judy King used to post her impressions of many of the common occurences at Lakeside as well as her view of some of the delights and surprises she encountered. I just returned from four days in Texas and I spent today reacquainting myself with some of the reasons I live here.

Sleeping in and getting up late to enjoy coffee on the terrace and the view of Mezcala Island straight out from the house. Regardless of the lake level it's gorgeous out where I live. The light breeze ruffled the surface causing a shimmer that ran for hundreds of yards, reflecting the sunlight and highlighting the blue. Birds fed and fished in the shallows and the tall reeds offered a brilliant green counterpoint to the water.

BBQ at Tom's in Joco, visiting with Tom and Manuela, and stopping on the way out to play with the three Chihuahua puppies; two fawn colored and already spoken for, and the tiny black one still looking for a new home.

A long afternoon walk along the lakeshore and thoughts of another aspect of the water level. All around me as I walked the dusty lanes were small fenced plots, claimed and divided by some unknown concensus but still owned by the Mexican government. Federal land, but now appropriated by those who live nearby for growing crops or grazing animals.

Small fields and pastures, most about one to three acres, some in use, some standing by. Here, corn stalks four feet tall; here, bean plants almost ready to bear; here, squash plants, harvested at least twice and still offering the promise of much more to come.

Cows with fat calves by their sides, and sheep and goats with their young. Sleek, shiny horses grazing on the lush grass of the shore.

They have no title to this land, and some would argue no right to be here, but they're using what's available in the best way they know how. Like most, I want the lake restored to it's grandeur of the '40s and '50s (at least from what I've seen in the pictures) but I wonder how it will affect those who use the Federal Zone each day? One more element to the equation.

Welcome back, UD. Hope everything went well in Texas, we were thinking of you and you're always in our prayers.
Many thanks for sharing your beautiful thoughts. Do keep up the good work, it gives us all a lift to read them. Miss Pansy wants to share lunch when we get back from the equinox at Chichen Itza.

Hi Peggy,

Lunch with Miss Pansy is always a special occasion, and kudos to la Nueva Posada for allowing that well-mannered young lady to dine with us.

You and Roy take care around those itsy chickens. see you when you get back.

BTW, NO MORE lung cancer! All gone. Thanks to everyone for all the good thoughts.
