Ajijic to San Miguel de Allende

My partner and I are planning to spend a few days in Ajijic in July and then go on to San Miguel. Would it be better to rent a car in Ajijic, drive to San Miguel, return the car to Ajijic and then to Guadalajara for our return flight; or get a bus in Guad (?) and return by bus? Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.
