Ajijic: Then and Now Video

Can't Post | Private Reply
Found a really interesting video on YouTube. It shows photos of Ajijic taken today opposite photos from 50 years ago. So much is different. So much is the same.

Video was created by someone named "bestjonbon". Enjoy.

Just thought I would let you know, the queen of plagiarism took the info from your post and attributed it to herself on another forum. Must be nice to have someone do your work and then take credit for yourself!

I don't know who you're referring to because I don't really read any other forums except for Chapala.com once in a while to find out something specific. No matter, I didn't create the video. Hopefully credit was given to the person who did.

Here is a quote from the other forum: "I found this on Youtube and thought others might find it interesting. this is the link:" My objection is that this person has become famous for this type of activity and been confronted about it. She is a member of this forum and others and is constantly taking credit when all she does is basically a copy and paste of the work of others without giving proper acknowledgment of the source. This would include many of the various rumors and speculations that are so rampant at the Lake.

And that's pretty much why I don't read other forums. I don't care.

It's your objection. Live it up.

To quote yourself: " ...............is the regional "re-poster" of nearly anything that could be construed as a 'notice'. She's busy on many boards. Harmless I'd say"

When one has their original material copied word for word from one forum, copied and re-posted on another forum by a person representing same as their original thoughts, there is a definite lack of integrity. The same goes for copying/pasting of copyrighted material. In my case, the irony is that the re-poster did not know how to copy/paste the accompanying photos that made the original post complete.

And that is my rant for today!

I agree. No more "rants for today" would be good. Let's just focus on the video.

I thought it was beautifully created. I've lived in Ajijic for a very short time...just 2 1/2 years. For me, the incorporation of the archival photos was special. I was a little surprised to see the Sayacos (sp?) from 50 years ago, but I was flat-out stunned to see the globos.

Yeah, we have a Walmart now. But still....

I agree it was a fun video. Does any one know the history behind the Sayacos and the globos? The Zapotecs in Oaxaca have huge globos in their processions and no one down there knew when the custom was started.
I was told the Sayocos are prehispanic and were Nahuatl but I do not know if it is correct. Anyone knows?
What is the correct selling of sayoco?

The correct spelling is sayaca. It means cross-dresser. You will see sayacas, the type in the video, all over Mexico.

The video is wonderful. Thanks for posting it, tashby.

Thank you for the correction. They have a great parade in Chiapa de Corzo for San Sebastian and Parachico fiestas , the interresting part is tat only "real men" are allowed to participate, the real cross dressers" are not allowed to participate.

Great video: thanks for bringing it here.
Trip down Memory Lane: Long ago, I lived on a boat and one of my neighbors on the dock was an airline reservations guy whose idea of heaven was his vacations to Lake Chapala. I still remember him telling about the water hyacinths floating on the lake and how beautiful the area was. I never for a moment imagined I'd wind up there!

Please allow me to express a contrarian view which grows out of my past life experience as a professional film and video maker and cinematography teacher. I thought most of the pictures were interesting, but I felt the overall production was not very good.

The dwell time on the pictures was too short to fully appreciate them. The use of multiple transition effects is a mark of an amateur. The general rule in cinematography is to use only one transitional form, or maybe two in special cases. Computer programs for editing videos typically include dozens of transitions, so the temptation is great to use them all. The result is a confusing presentation.

Dwell time and transitions, along with many other items, are part of what is called the grammar of cinematography. A visual piece, like a written piece, needs to observe the rules of grammar to be the most effective.

In case you are seriously interested in making good videos, find a copy of The Five Cs of Cinematography. It's an old book, but it's one the best on how to put together an effective production.

That's all for today. Class dismissed. Smile

I agree that the speediness of the images was a drawback to the enjoyment. I would have liked to slow it down. I had the impression that it was an amateur production.....but did enjoy seeing it.

Of course you're right, Rolly! The silly computer-generated transition gimmicks detracted, and maybe they could have held on the photos a bit longer, but only a bit longer! (I was specifically looking for something to send to someone, a television producer, that gave them a feel for what the town is like. And most of the stuff I found on YouTube suffered from the exact opposite, and deadlier, effect. Holding on the images ......far..........too.......long. I was happy to find a piece that propelled itself at a decent clip.)

Most of the creativity I appreciated was conceptual, not executional. And vintage fotos are always a treat.

I could be wrong, just an opinion, but I think the sayacas is more of an Ajijic thing. That makes me doubtful it goes back to the Nahuas. I know of no indigenous people in the area of the valley of Mexico who have such customs (but I don't know all the peoples/pueblos/remote areas).

They have them in Chiapa de Corzo , Chiapas and there I was told it was a Aztec custom, around Ajijic I was told the same thing and same in Oaxaca but I have not found anything concrete about it. In Chiapas the Spaniards brought in tribes from Tlaxcala and fro other part of the lake in Mexico who live in the barrio de los Mexicanos and Tlaxcala so they may have brought the customs there, I donīt know but it is not only a Ajijic custom, they exists in other parts of Mexico.

Since the Sayacas have been prowling the streets all week for Carnaval, I needed to find this video link to send to a friend. They were in rare form today in Ajijic.

Thought I'd bump the video for anyone who didn't catch it the first time. Happy Fat Tuesday.
