A decent hamburger

Last night Patty and I stumbled into the new Big George Grill located about 100 feet north of the Plaza on the west side of Colon. I do mean stumbled. The floor is a tad irregular in places.

The burgers were cheap and they were good. The meat is actually a little too lean for my taste. You need about 20% fat in hamburger to keep it juicy. The burgers are cooked on a George Forman grill and that removes even more grease. The bun didn't disintagrate after the first bite and the cheese was a cheddar instead of "Merican".

Wonder of all wonders, they serve very good french fries. They were actually crisp when they came to the table and remained that way pretty much through the meal which didn't take long. Having been dissapointed so many times with the limp, greasy french fries here in Mexico, I didn't order any. Patty was really thrilled to share hers with me.

Beer is 12 pesos and a decent size glass of wine is 15 pesos.

If little girl who waited tables could alter her hip hugger jeans to be about 3/4 of an inch lower, she could probably double her tip money.

Jack, Jack! What an admission! The next thing we know you'll be having all these kids in bikinis! Well, at least we know you're not as old as you sometimes sound! Thanks for the burger suggestion! Actually I may be even older than you so don't be offended by my previous observation!

Just because I'm old doesn't mean that my memory is gone.

Now I have only been here for 8 days. Big George's Grill is a pretty good place, cheap and last night the music was Jonny Cash. They even have hot dogs and they are good. 27 pesos for a hamburger, fries and a pop is a good deal.

The reason everything is less fat is it is cooked on the George Forman grill; thusly the name of the place. I thought that was funny.

The little girl that you refer to is Brenda. She speaks good english and is very nice.

Mario's in San Antonioo has better burgers though.

Meet you some day UJ....shoe

The best burger in Ajijic is called "Cheese Whopper with Extra Mayo and Onions" along with a donut at Plaza Mexico in Guadalajara. The second best burger in Ajajic is at Bruno's Hideway west of town about a mile. If you don't like these here samiches, just roll over and expire.,

Herradura Blanco Sweetpea.

Do you mean San Antonio Pedro? Now, I must admit that this here Canadian is a hell of a cook and I rarely have anything nice to say about Canadians. It is extremely difficult for a Bama Boy to admit this but Pedro makes a great BBQ pork samich. He has no idea what he is doing but he does it incorrectly with tremendous style. Hell of a samich. But, olives??!!!

Does he make a nice burger as well?

Yup, San Antonio Pedro. There was a thread a while back on this board about...well, who knows what (probably possums), but it evolved/devolved into a discussion of where to get a good hamburger in the Lake Chapala area. That was just after Pedro opened and before Vicky did. Pedro was making a super burger then...I haven't had one for a while, but I suspect that he still does. It was about the best hamburger I've ever eaten anywhere, not just at Lakeside. I like it on a grilled bolillo instead of a bun.

And for a real treat of a different kind, try the Chicken Hamburger at Tony's (yeah, San Antonio Tony's). It's an A+.

Lay off the hooch, Bubba, if you're driving over there.

Now, look'ahere Esperanza, I like Pedro's cooking. He is a fantastic asset for our little hick town despite his Canadienseism. But, today I decided to give Pedro's hamburger the acid test and try one. No competition. Bruno's Hideway is hands down champ locally speaking. And I say that as one who loves Pedro's food. Actually, Burger King de Guadalajara (any branch) whips both they asses. Plus Pedro puts sprouts on his burgers. I mean sprouts! Is this Ajijic or Santa Monica?!!??? Good Lord!

Pedro tells me he is moving to West Village in October, the new North Beach of Lake Chapala. We are so in out here.

OK Bubba...when I get back from my leetle away time in the USofA, we can go have a burger at Vicky's. Maybe it would be fun to plan a MexConnect Ajijic Forum outing.

Pedro never put sprouts on a burger for ME. *Sniff sniff* I did get a lot of little chopped-up stuff around on the plate, red peppers and things.

BTW, I had lunch at Lupita's (Tepalo)(the lunch joint on the plaza) today and ate a really really really good chicken salad. Did I say really good? I was astounded.

By the way, I do not mean to mislead those foolish enough to have nothing better to do than waste their time reading these meandering discussions among fractured geezers but my review of Vicky's and Pedro's burgers was meant to be a ruthlessly honest opinion from someone whose tastebuds run to Philly Cheese Steaks with a fine Burgundy. Pedro makes an excellent hamburger and Bubba likes sprouts. Sort of a carryover from years spent living in Berkeley (North Oakland, to be honest).

From a frequent (but not enough!) visitor of Ajijic, and a huge fan of Pedro's culinary delights.... I am clueless (my friends say this is a constant state!) as to where "West Village" might be located; and since I wouldn't want to miss the new 'North Beach' on my next trip, howse about enlightening moi.

I believe the location in question is the now defunct Pemienta Negra.
