$1,000/month lifestyle

What will $1,000 a month in social security for 2 cover in the lakeside area? Simplicity is no vice to my way of thinking. Thanx to all.

If simplicity is no problem, then 1,000 USD will do nicely. Many local families live on less and with larger families. Don't look for housing in Ajiic proper look in Chapala or Joco etc. Where 'gringos" live, housing is too expensive.

While two can live on US$1,000 per month, it won't get you an FM3 unless you own your home in Mexico. If you hope to do it on an FMT, don't forget those twice-a-year trips to the border to get your new FMTs.

That is not very much, more so at lakeside. You could live in Guad. of about that. I rent apartments there at $2500 pesos per month. I do not rent to gringos. I had to many of them leaving the country without paying bills... A few where hidding from the FBI....hehehe. They were finally caught........DISH2000

PS-I would not live where the poor people live, more crimes, more shootings, more problems. Unless it is a small village, you will still have more problems. A young gringo student lived in an area that was cheap. The first night someone drove by and shot out his window.......got out fast!!!!!

Ask Mago in Chapala to help you in qualifying for an FM3 and therefore avoid expensive trips to the border. She may also get you qualified for Mexican IMMS for both of you at about half the cost of my budget for health insurance. If you don't drive this should also reduce your costs. Add or subtract to my budget below as you see fit.

My all inclusive budget for a single when in Chapala:

$250 rental of fully furnished one bedroom apartment near lake with all utilities,Cable TV,secure parking and no crime I've ever seen or heard of

$300 three meals a day including one at a restaurant and a $1 a day for soda & a $1 a day for treats

$ 20 monthly for weekly maid doing laundry and Spanish classes

$100 health insurance

$100 car maintainance,gas,insurance & eventual replacement

$ 30 clothing

$ 40 internet service and phone

$ 60 miscellaneous

$900 total
