VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico — A strengthening Tropical Storm Alex is expected to become a hurricane Tuesday as it swirls toward the Gulf coast of northern Mexico and southern Texas, where authorities are readying emergency shelters and distributing sandbags.

Alex, or what's left of it, is headed straight for my house. When it arrives Friday, the winds will be gone, but we expect to get a good rain. Now, noon Thurday, it's cloudy with a light mist and delightfully cool.
