Taxi Shake Down

My wife and I were going from El Centro in Veracruz today and had almost reached our hotel when a police car pulled our taxi over and demanded we pay 20 pesos for some infraction I couldn't understand. I just paid it, did not want to argue. First time I have ever been stopped while riding in a taxi.

Worst has happened to my family when we traveled through Tampico when we moved from Veracruz to Nuevo Laredo. The transito stopped the moving truck and "fined" them and when we turned around to find the truck they pulled us over and "fined" us. After that we travelled to what looked like a safe location to talk and got "fined" again for being in an area that was not for parking. That was a commercial area by day that apparently had problems at night. We were fined for parking in a no parking area with nobody else around. My wife fought with the transito to have them escort us out of Tampico if they wanted the payola.

If it's silly and stupid when you get pulled over in Mexico. Then... Welcome to Mexico. Bring or be a Native Spanish speaker to survive with you wallet intact.
Lived for 35 months in Mexico. I feel like I paid my dues...

Tampico is notorious for this. I have heard, but can not verify, that many who travel through Tampico simply ignore the transito and keep on driving.
