My introduction to violence at the border was living six years (1996-2002) in Tijuana during the struggle between the Arellano-Felix and Sinaloa cartels. It was a precursor to what would happen to the rest of the Republic in ensuing years. When I moved to San Miguel de Allende, none of my Mexican or expat contacts were even familiar with the street meaning of the word "levanton". My remark was inspired by the line delivered by Benito Del Toro's character in the movie Traffic: "I think the United States needs to pay attention to Tijuana now!"
