Morelia: Try to be there on Saturday evening for the lighting of the Catedral. Around 8:45 p.m. Centro is a marvelous wandering-around place, but you should also get up to Bosque Monarca, up by the Tec de Monterey, and Tres Marias for another perspective on Morelia. A meal at the Villa Montana, and breakfast at the Virrey de Mendoza.

Patzcuaro: Again, a wonderful wandering-around place.

Skip Janitzio, but do make it up to Santa Clara de Cobre, which is to copper what Taxco is to silver.

Between Patzcuaro and Morelia is Cuanajo, a village dedicated to wooden furniture. But before you reach that is Tupataro, where the church demands a visit.

A drive around Lake Pátzcuaro is scenic and interesting.
