Where to find local style woven bed covers

Can't Post | Private Reply
I would like to find a place in Michoacan to buy a local style bed cover for my new bed. I have recently moved from a furnished apartment to an unfinished one, and am looking for a place to buy furniture as well.

Sears, Fabricas de Francia, Sams, and Costco all have the US style commercial bed covers.

In the Morelia Dulce market there is a vendor selling mostly the colorful hand woven, cheap bed throws that do not cover the sides of the bed. And they are too heavy!!!

I am looking for something less colorful, covering the sides and end, and lighter weight - more like a bedspread. Actually, are these used as a blanket for warmth as well? I think so...

Figuring out how to live in local style takes time!

Where to buy furniture? Tables, chairs, sofas, etc. Most of the sofas in stores in Morelia are not comfortable. I like the solid, heavy wood furniture in Cuanajo, but so much of it is really not of very good quality and the chairs not comfortable. I found a wood shop in Patcuaro to make a bed frame out of POROTA wood, very hard wood and good quality workmanship. But the owners catalog of furniture was limited and I did not find anything else to order from him. Actually, I need to see furniture before buying it. I had seed one of his bed bases before ordering one with a few modifications (no space between the support slats, stronger support under the slats...).

In Patzcuaro, over by Dr. Coss are several stores which sell woven cotton bedspreads in several weights and a huge variety of colors. There are some which are fairly thin, perfect for summer. In Uruapan, Fabrica San Pedro also has a wonderful selection. Read more about about Fabrica San Pedro at http://www.mexconnect.com/...jrose/jruruapan.html Fabrica San Pedro's cotton spreads are much heavier.

In Morelia, Dico bears exploring in addition to the stores you've named for furniture.

Cuanajo furniture ranges in quality (and price) from very low end to some fairly remarkable product.

Great! I will go to these places in Patzcuaro near Dr. Coss. Who is this doctor and where is he?

Are these bedspreads that flow over the sides, not the small throws that are sold to cover only the top of a bed?

Thank you for sharing your ideas!

Dr. Coss has been dead for nearly two hundred years, but the eponymous street is alongside the Plaza Grande.

To be sure about the size of the bedspread, take along measurements which match your expectations. Perhaps you might wish to use a king-sized bedspread on a double bed.

There is also a shop in the Once Patios complex (up the stairs off of Dr. Coss) in Patzcuaro that has a good selection of bedspreads. It's one of the upstairs spaces and has several looms set up with weavers actually using them. Their prices for a double were pretty reasonable. I almost bought one myself last month, but my luggage was already overpacked

Don't forget about El Jorongo. They have beautiful handloomed wool ones. A shop in the Plaza Don Vasco in Patzcuaro and one on the hiway coming in from Morelia.

I tried to find the Once Patios but could not. I visited two stores with covers on Dr Coss. Where is the Once Patio complex, and the stairs off Dr Coss. Is this an outdoor alleyway, directly opposite the Plaza Vasco to the East, between calle V. Quiroga and Pnce de Leon?

Are both shops called El Jorongo? Is one across from the Plaza Grande to the South, or maybe East... on Dr Coss, or Calle Pnce de Leon?

The one on the road to Morelia, is that near where all the taxis line up to take people to Morelia?

To find Once Patios...if you are standing in the Plaza Grande, look for the building with the sign for the restaurant Primero Piso. The street that runs to the side of that building is Dr. Coss. Head down Dr. Coss about a block or so, on your left you will see a wide walkway/alley with steps at various intervals that goes up the hill to the street above. Go up that walkway, about halfway up you'll find entrances to a couple of courtyards, that is Once Patios. The shops are kind of strung out around the courtyards on both the ground level and second level. The building used to be a convent.

Hi whistler,
The El Jorongo on the plaza is on the same side as La Surtidora, on the other corner of the block. That's the side with Hotel Los Escudos. The main shop is across from a convenience store that carries Victoria beer and almost always has ice and next door to the tiendita is a place where they husk coconuts, you can tell by the huge pile of husks outside, no line-up of taxis. Also, the side road to Hotel Villa Patzcuaro is next to convenience store. The street # is L. Cardenas # 520. They have a website...www.eljorongo.com
Hope that helps,
M

El jorongo was excellent, but for rugs! I found the bedspreads I was looking for at Adame Grupo Textil, Dr Coss #2. Huge inventory. Low prices. Once patios was surprisingly disappointed, but on Mondays many of the tiendas are closed.
