Dear Friends, Please accept my apologies if you have read this message on other boards. I am sending it to several in the hope I reach a few people for whom this volunteer opportunity works. I manage a tutoring program for the little children (ages 3 through 7) at Casa Hogar, an orphanage located about a 5 minute walk from the Tarascan fountain in Morelia. Currently, we have 10 children in this program. We conduct tutoring sessions for them every weekday between 4 pm and 6 pm, which basically involves helping them learn the alphabet, basic numbers and math (addition primarily), beginning writing, and for some children, help with reading. We tutor them on a one-to-one basis and aim to have at least 2 to 3 tutors for each session. We need a few more volunteers who could volunteer at least once a week, but if someone wanted to volunteer more often than that, they would be most welcome. Basic Spanish is helpful. We need volunteers from now until mid-June when the school term ends. When I first started working with Casa Hogar last May, I expected to find children who were emotionally scarred and very difficult to work with. (My preconception of what orphans would be like). I was quite surprised and delighted to find that the children are generally quite happy and healthy. They are a joy to work and play with. Please let me know if you have any interest. Email is best – lbpierce@pacbell.net or you can try me at my home number – (443) 313-8505. Gracias, Linda
