I wonder if Mexico City is the best "connector" place to fly into from California when traveling to San Miguel de Allende. Thanks in advance for your response, Chuck77

The fares are probably cheapest flying from California to MEX.
You can get a bus at the airport to Querétaro, from there, a second bus to SMA.

I'm not familiar with León, GTO (BJX) airport, but it's pretty close, also and there are shuttle services to go to SMA. Overall, I beleive fling to MEX is best.
All generalities are suspect, including this one.

Last year while staying in SMA for 6 weeks, I met several people who flew into León, GTO (BJX) airport. They experienced more availability for rides to and from as well as less cost for the ride.
They were happy to have flown into GTO.

I have several girlfreinds from Phoenix who visit SMA every summer...they fly into Leon.

Chuck, I don't know about you, but I think most people shop the airlines for the best price. You should first check which companies fly from the city you want to fly from to Leon.

Price is usually what you look at first when choosing a flight. But you need to take into consideration the TOTAL price. Once you get to the Mexico City airport you need to find a way to SMA. Most people take the bus to Queration and then a connecting bus to SMA. You need tofacto in the cost you your bus fares when comparing flying to through Mexico City to Leon or Queretaro. Also, if convenience factor int your decision at all both Leao and QTO are closer and much more convienient. Most people who fly American from the US fo through Leon(BJX) to get to SMA. If you prefer Continental check into QTO.
