La Casa Santibanez, Guanajuato

Hi: I'm planning my fact finding trip for the month of June--know it's not the best season, but that may help me see the bad with the good. As one of the places I've chosen to look at is Guanajuato and I'm trying to do my month in Mexico on a budget, I've found the Casa Santibanez. Though it was started as a student hotel in 1994, it looks very nice and is only $25 a night for a private room (with bath) and breakfast. Has anyone stayed there? Also, if checking out Guanajuato as a possible future place to live, would anyone living there be willing to talk with me about what it's like to live there, cultural activities, places to learn Spanish, cost of living etc? Will be visiting Lake Chapala, Guadalajara, San Miguel as well. Any other suggestions as a future home of a 67 year young, very energetic Gringo (who does not yet speak Spanish but is determined to learn and integrate into Mexican life) with lots of experience living abroad, who also wants a place both rich in Mexican culture, as well as international arts, music, theater, etc. My plan is to try to find at least a starting base, return to the US for several months to make arrangements to be away for a year, and then see what happens after that. Any advice is welcome!

Hello Salimbene,

What is your physical condition? Much as I like Guanajuato, with my heart condition it would be impossible to live there.

So far as I know the physical problems with walking about the city are the only downside with that beautiful city if you can stand the hucksters on weekends.

It is filled with youngsters and tourists and has a hip yuppee ambient. You will like it. Real estate is escalating.

Adiós. jerezano.

Thanks for answering! I have considered the steps and though I'm fine for now (I'm 67 and can probably out salsa or merange dance most 35 year olds, I might not be in the coming years--not fond of hiking groceries and suitcases up and down stairs!. The hippie element might bother a New Yorker of the 50's 60's in the Village, but as a part time acadmic, I'm not bothered by students and prefer a mixed age environment to everyone being on the far side of fifty. Any other suggestions?

We loved the vivid colors and vivacious energy of Guanajuato and although my husband had melanoma surgery on his leg about a month before our visit and I have had both hips replaced we walked the city center and from there up to the mummy museum. It was a long trek, all up, up, up hill but we did it.

The city is so colorful and busy. We really enjoyed the diversity of ages, the lack of expat presence and just sucking up the vibe in the air....and we have no hippie tendencies at all...so it appeals to many types....
