Well we had a 5.2 earthquake today here in Melaque. No damage as that is not a big one but it lasted about 5 seconds. Now I do not know if it was worse at the center or not.

I went to the beach to wait for the tidal wave afterwards and had a few beers while I waited. It never came. Oh well, I will go back tomorrow and wait some more. Now I have a good excuse to go to the beach and drink beer while I wait for the tidal wave.

The water is a little cool at about 85 as we have had some rain last week. It will warm back up though.

The waiter there was proud that his watch stopped when the earthquake happened. He was showing everybody.

Wow, I am impressed. Too bad about the nonexisting tidal wave: I agree it is worth waiting for ... but from some hight, may be? Just to be on the safe side?

Shoe, rolling with natures' big punch!
I can so see you:)

Many buildings in Melaque, Barra, Manzanillo circa 1995 weren't so fortunate.

Great deal of structural damage which drove the tourism industry into a pit from which it took about 3 re-building years to recover.

Which is about the time I started writing my stories about the place...to help bring back the tourists. Used to answer 100's (1000's) of pms as a one woman NGO:)
Interesting period of time which also helped make local connections.

La Manzanilla, further north, experienced a tsunami in the aftermath of the earthquake because of the flatness of the beach and the lowness of the village itself.

Stores, hotels, homes were covered with mud while people raced for the hills which are just above. Big job to clean up after all that.

For awhile, the Argentinian director of the TV show 'Road Rules' was (his words) picking my brains about where in Mexico his crew could film interesting 'adventures' for the show's participants.

One suggestion was La Manzanilla, (then) a tiny fishing village in tropical splendor, crocs, jungle where the kids might participate in a local rodeo. (bull-riding)

They went elsewhere, if memory is correct, for a bull-fight
