Shopping advice

I just started living in The Puerto Vallarta area (Bucerias) and am wondering where I can go to get. Marischino(SP?) cherries, table cream or half and half(havn't seen that yet) and any kind of good chocolate(either mix for milk or bars for baking. Thanks in advance!!

I buy maraschino cherries in a large jar at Sam's. My main grocery store (Soriana) stocks a variety of chocolate bars and powers.

Half & Half as it is sold in the US is not usually found in Mexico. What you can find is Media Crema in small boxes, usually near the evaporated and condensed milk in large supermarkets, WalMarts, etc. This will be a little thicker than the US version, we usually thin it a little with milk. If you want fresh, then get fresh crema and thin it with milk to your liking.

Chocolate made in Mexico is different in taste and consistency than US or European chocolate. A chocolatier in Guatemala explained it to me that there is a final 'finishing' stage that is generally not done in C.A. or Mexico. So, it's coarser and doesn't melt as smoothly. Chocolate in Mexico also often has sugar and cinnamon already in it. European baking chocolate can be found in most high end supermarkets and specialty stores. It's probably better to buy that for baking. I like the taste of Mexican chocolate candy but if you don't, excellent European candy is available.

The chocolate I was referring to at Soriana is good old Hershey's coco power and bars of cooking stuff. They also have several different kinds of Mexican chocolate which I also like.

Hello,

The advice to buy fresh cream and milk and thin the cream to the consistency you want is excellent. However, for emergencies Nestlè Media Crema in small cans is found in any store that sells canned goods, even the smallest Mom and Pop. You can do the same mix to taste with this and fresh milk. Lechera is different it is sweetened condensed milk.

And you can find Mexican chocolate of many different presentations in most stores as well. You just have to experiment until you find a brand you like.

Thanks for all who replied to me. Your answers were a HUGE help to me. A few more things if you might. Does anyone know where I can buy Instant pudding mixes? And also maybe Dream Whip? Thanks SO mcuh. Just getting things for recipes.
