PV cannot seem to catch a break - grenades exploding, one or more bridge collapsing in the area and the partial shutdown (11PM - 7AM) of the airport for 6 months of runway repair starting in October.

The new bridge, which is just downstream from the one that collapsed, was opened to two way traffic at 2 this afternoon. They had closed it for awhile to check it. There are also several alternate routes that are a bit windy. The governor says they are going to put in a Bailey bridge. It looks like two new supports will be needed to fix the old bridge.

A Bailey bridge is a portable pre-fabricated truss bridge, designed for use by military engineering units to bridge up to 60-metre gaps (200 ft).

According to nayaritenlinea.com the missing span is 80 to 100 meters. That link also has some of the best pictures.

Wow. I dug up my map of Jalisco, and as I read it, the bridge goes between Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. If you were going to Nuevo Vallarta or other developments north of Puerto Vallarata, from the Puerto Vallarta airport, that would be a long drive.

Given that they plan to open up part of the bridge to light traffic, it may not be catastrophic to tourism, but the hassle factor could be large, especially if you were planning to travel by bus. Obviously if the other part of the bridge fails, that would be quite a bit worse, especially for anyone on the bridge at the time.

That is in error-the missing span is much less than that. I know that bridge well.

There really are no good alternatives to get from PV to Nuevo. and even the road to Guadalajara through Mascota was reported closed by landslides according to Guadalajara reporter.

The Mascota road was opened yesterday. The river at that point is at least 400' wide.

Traffic is flowing steadily across the PV bridge in both directions. See live video of the flow to see if it still is. How cool is that!! As I watched it it looked like it really was live. Occasionally livestream broadcasts will be reruns but I haven't seen any evidence of that in this stream. Also a summary of what happened and what is being said locally but not much new there except the body recovery. Has anyone seen confirmation that it really was the male passenger in the taxi? 23 Km. off shore seems like a long way.

A headline in the Guadalajara newspaper "El Mural" today said, "10 hours from GDL to Vallarta" by car. Ouch.
