PV banks - no US exchange

Does anybody know why the banks in PV are no longer exchanging US dollars into Pesos? I have been told by several people that the banks are telling them to go to the Cambio kiosks to covert their US dollars.

I have still seen the signs in the banks with the exchange rates. So, I don't know why the bank would say that. Bancomer does require you to bring your passport to exchange money, possibly if a person didn't have their passport in hand, they might be directed to a casa de cambio.
In the Bucerias area, Intercam is a good place to exchange mony, their rate is always good.

Thanks....I'll bet your are right, they are probably requiring them to show their passport. As always, you are very helpful.

We had similar experience recently in Guanajuato. No banks would exchange dollars, they had rates posted, and one
even stated "exchange/cambio" , but would not exchange them. We were told the rates were posted for deposits only.
Banco Azteca said they would change dollars, but refused to change a hundred dollar bill. After much frustration, we
have gone to using ATMs at banks.

HSBC no longer exchanges dollars for pesos.

Are you referring to actual dollars (bills) not being exchanged for pesos or ATM transactions (also)?

For as long as I can remember, all Mexican banks have exchanged currency (dollars to pesos) for their account holders only. If you have no bank account (or no account at the bank where you are), currency has to be exchanged at a casa de cambio.

Most of the banks on Puerto Vallarta will exchange currency for anyone. Sometimes a passport is required, some places don't require them.
Probably because it is a resort area, banks are accustomed to exchaging currency and do a lot of it.

Esperanza, you have a LOT more experience in Mexico than I, but when I visit I have not had any of the banks in Ajijic refuse my currency exchange requests. Now, I'm usually only asking for $50-$100 change, but they always fork over the pesos. Casa de cambio of course deal almost exclusively in currency. YMMV
