Mission to Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I recently returned from a humanitarian project delivering vehicles and equipment to towns in Mexico without them. This was the third trip for the group and the first I've participated in. This year we delivered a fire truck, 2 aid cars, 4 police cars and a bus equipped for wheelchairs. We took vehicles to Ayutla, Autlan, Barra de Navidad, and delivered medical and safety equipment to Mazatlan for a Rotary group in Tacoma.

What an experience! To read about the trials and tribulations of the trip:

There's links to an updated blog about the trip, news coverage from the Tacoma paper, and a link to donate money.

This trip had big issues at the border. Due to the age of 2 vehicles, tax official asked for $6000 to let them through. This took up over 7 hours of precious road time spent on bare asphalt in the middle of the Sonoran desert.

We ended the trip in Puerto Vallarta. We happened to be there the night of the big concert which made it difficult to see much of the town. That was quite a rain storm!

Many of the fotos are missing on the Blog and I didn't see the section on Barra de Navidad - I live nextdoor. I'll look more around the site. Interesting and what a project

Astounding. What a great effort. I can only imagine the work that went into just procuring the vehicles & then getting them ready not to mention the mountain of necessary paperwork.

My hat is off to you and all of your companions for even trying to accomplish this mission(s).... much less actually getting it done! You story gives me faith in humanity and should be broadcast on national TV over and over again.

Roger:
Great job done!! Congratulations! Fortunately I have been a member of Rotary here in Xalapa since 1983 and Rotary is an integral part of my life. My club has installed over 14 "bebederos de agua purificada"(purified water fountains) in the parks and schools of Xalapa, as well as in other towns. There is a tremendous demand for our club's participation to install these drinking fountains.
Another more personal Rotary project of mine is "Ayudate ayudando"(Help yourself helping others) where we use tandem bicycles to ride with blind and handicapped people. We are also working with the cycling activist group Prociclismo Xalapa to promote using bicycles as everyday transportation and to build "ciclovias"(bike paths) and bicycle parking in our city. There is more information on our website www.prociclismoxalapa.org
¡Hasta pronto, amigos!
