Buying a car in the US

Hello all - I'm getting ready to buy a new car in Texas and was hoping someone could help me with a question. Should I use my son's Texas address to register the car and then report my Guadalajara address once I'm back home? I know that the Texas department of motor vehicles will renew my Texas driver's license through the mail using my Mexican address and the annual vehicle registration fee can also be renewed.

When I buy the car I'll need US car insurance for the week after I buy the car and will need to provide a US address to get the insurance. But now I'm wondering if I could end up with problems at the border from the Mexican authorities when they see my FM3 and then see the car registered to a Texas address.

Last week, on the General Forum, under the heading Jury Duty/Texas Driver's License, Delia reported that Texas will no longer issue drivers licenses using a Mexican address. You might need to check into that - if it is so, it makes using your son's address the only way to go.

Thank you very much for that, bournemouth. I guess things have changed. Eight years ago I came down here with Texas plates and a Texas driver's license and was able to get my registration and driver's license renewal through the mail. I suppose Homeland Security has changed all that. By the way, I will be taking you up on your offer to get me in touch with your car insurance agent.
