What papers will we need at the border to bring our SUV into into Mexico?
We will be there a couple of months before returning to the States.
The SUV is being paid for with Capital One Auto loads, so it is not
completely ours yet It's a 2008 Chevy.

First you will have to get the permission of your lien-holder to take the car into Mexico. This permission must be verified by a 'letter' from the lien holder on their letterhead. Many lenders will NOT give this permission.

If you get over that hurdle, you will need three copies of the following:

+ title or registration for the vehicle. The name(s) on the registration must be the person importing the vehicle
+ copies of your driver's license
+ a credit card with the exact name as appears on the registration (plan on Mexico charging a refundable deposit on that credit card up to about $400). This will be refunded when you take the car out of Mexico and cancel the temporary permit (TIP)

Of course you will need your US Passport; make three copies of the 'face' page

And you will need Mexican car insurance as your US insurance is not valid in Mexico. There are several places online where you can get this insurance prior to hitting the border.

you will need and FMM or tourist card, original registration, notarized letter giving permission from lender, Mexican insurance, $44 usd fee for TIP and $400 usd deposit and possibly a copy of your passport.........

Thanks, that was what I was afraid of. I think it will be better to just buy a car in Mexico. This was going to be a trip to bring items we wanted from our house in the USA to our house in Mexico. I'll probably end up shipping those items from Texas to Puerto Vallarta.

Hi Bill,
You'll be MUCH happier with a Mex-plated car here! My big Texas Tundra was a mordida-magnet fallr years. And we look forward to you all joining our Sunday potlucks!
