B.C. man shot dead in Mexico robbery

A B.C. man from Salt Spring Island has been shot and killed in Mexico during an apparent home invasion.
Robin Wood, whose age has been reported as either 67 or 68, confronted two robbers Monday night inside a home in the Mexican resort town of Melaque on the Pacific coast. One of them was armed with a pistol, according to reports.
He was shot in the chest when they demanded money and computers, media reports say.

This is a very tragic event. It is big news up in Canada today. Another serious blow to the Mexican tourism industry.

The police spokesperson told CBC News that robberies and associated murders are common in the area. Nevertheless, murders in tourist areas are still rare and it was pointed out that this crime occurred in a residential neighborhood...for whatever that is worth.

This event was the topic of discussion on two radio talk shows in Vancouver today. One talk show had the author of "Moving to Mexico" who lives PT in Bucerias and the other talk show had an acquaintance of the fellow killed in Melaque. Both talk show hosts pointed out that the events in Mexico tend to get sensationalized here in Canada and agreed that this sort of tragic event can and does happen right here in Vancouver.

I have never seen much value in comparing crime rates in different countries. I do, however, have over 35 years experience as either a frequent traveller to, or full time resident of, Mexico. I can honestly say that I was never aware of so many foreigners murdered or otherwise victims of violent crimes in the aggregate as in the past two years. This includes areas in which gringos tend to reside such as Baja California, San Miguel de Allende and Lakeside. Foreigners always seemed to be off-limits for whatever reason. Similarly, women and children were rarely victims of violent crimes but, sadly, that is no longer the case either.

Other articles said robberies and murders are common but attacks against foriegn tourists are rare

Ruben is a cop and probably the only one in the offce that spoke English. The Director of Public Safety in Cihuatlan is Matias Jimenez Villarreal.

They were talking about the events in Melaque. On one show they had a fellow from Bucerias who wrote (or has a web-site) "Living in Mexico" discussing what transpired in Melaque and his thoughts on the dangers of Mexico. On the second show they had an acquaintance of the fellow from Salt Spring discussing the fellow himself and the fact that many Salt Spring residents winter in Melaque and may be changing their plans if it isn't too late.

The other incident you are referring to broke in Vancouver this morning, in the papers and on the radio. Just when you thought the bad "headline grabbing" press about Mexico couldn't get any worse..........

And that the resort town, Huatulco, is now being referred to as a "dangerous place" in the Canadian newspaper article. Is this an example of what some call "sensationalized news" in the American and Canadian press? As the statistics mount about foreigners murdered in Mexico, will the reporting of such ever be deemed responsible rather than sensational?

The reference to "sensational" is more in regards to the fact the incidents in Mexico always make the headlines yet incidents in other countries and/or domestic events don't seem to garner the same press. As an example some Canadians were also killed in Jamaica recently yet it has hardly made the news. http://www.ctv.ca/...d-in-jamaica-120105/ There has also been a rash of local shootings in Vancouver (5 over a two day period) that barely received the same press and there wasn't any "talk shows" about it. Now this could all be because Mexico is a top destination for Canadian travellers???

With all due respect, I would hardly think that the deaths of victims in an automobile accident, as happened in Jamaica, however unfortunate, merit the same news coverage as those viciously murdered in Mexico. Comparisons are odious, particularly when they are used to mitigate or otherwise downplay a very serious series of events in a country those of us on Mexconnect all love. This is a tragic time in the history of Mexico and no desperate application of the "it happens in the USA too" red herring can change that fact.

To me there is a big difference between being killed in a car accident and having your decomposing body found in a shallow grave (but maybe that's just me.)

The Toronto Man that was killed in Grenada at the hands of the local police got a great deal of press and continues to be followed up on at least in Toronto....

Perhaps one just notices Mexican news more than other countries because that's where ones interest is.....

It also seems that some people think that their precious blue passport (whether it be Canadian or American) will protect them from the evils (inseguridad) that general population in Mexico is currently experiencing.... This simply is not true. Are foreigners being targeted for crime, perhaps sometimes because they can be easy targets, are they exempt from crime because of their blue passports or immigration status, certainly not.....

Believe me it can and will get a lot worse even President Calderon said so in a speech not too long ago

While I agree they make not be suitable comparisons I can assure you that if a Canadian family was killed in a "Mexican" car crash it would be on the front page (similar to the hotel explosion that killed a few Canadians last year in Mexico). You also didn't acknowledge my other example of local, equally vicious, Canadian events not getting the same press.

I guess to summarize, you feel that Mexican events are given fair and equal press by the NOB media and I do not........

Looking over my maps I have found the town of Melaque in the past but unable to find it today?
I live here in Vallarta where is it in relation to here?
