?s about Morelia

I have a friend who is thinking about moving to Morelia. She has a few questions that some of you might be able to answer. I was just there and wasn't able to get all her questions answered adequately. She would like to know if there are very many English speaking expats living there. Are there any neighborhoods where a community of expats has emerged? Are there any English language weeklies, monthlies or seasonal periodicals? What are the biggest Universities in Morelia? Can you recommend any good bilingual (Spanish/English) primary schools? Thank you for any help!

There are English-speaking expatriates in Morelia, but not a large number.

While in the old days, expatriates tended to live up on the hill – in Vista Bella and Santa Maria – today they’re dispersed throughout the city. There is no cohesive community of expatriates.

There are no English-language periodicals published in Morelia to the best of my knowledge.

Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo is the largest university in Morelia. Private universities include the Universidad de Morelia, Tec de Monterrey, Universidad Latina de America, La Salle, and Universidad Vasco de Quiroga.

Lancaster and Jefferson are well-regarded bilingual primarias.

Jennifer: Taking your answer as to primary bilibngual schools slightly out-of-context; could it be said that all state primary schools in Morelia would be "bilingual"? Or perhaps more to the point, that every primary school teaches English? My recent research in Mexican universities UNAM, UDLA-Puebla and ITESM indicated that these universities were all teaching English as a mandatory subject. The final test of the standard of English achieved was always related to an international standard, such as TEFL or CEP. I thought perhaps given your depth and breadth of experience in Morelia you might have some knowledge of this. This "commentary"may be too specific to be of interest to the general list - but who knows? Michael in Ottawa
