The conventional wisdom for renting a place in San Miguel is to stay in a hotel for a few days and then actually physically checkout any places for rent in person. An advertised casita might be charming but the neighborhood might not be. If you rely on someone who earns a commission, you might get stuck. Once you get to SMA, you will find numerous listings of places for rent in Atencion, the english language newspaper. I would also suggest you join one of the list serves which relate specifically to the area. The civilsma list has lots of messages from private individuals many of whom are seeking people to house-sit their homes for free in exchange for caring for the pets and generally making sure everything is OK.
