quality hand made guitars

We are going to visit Michoacan area (Morelia) later this year. We would like suggestions of places we could visit to see and purchase quality hand made guitars. We are interested in attending any Classical Guitar concerts that may be taking place during our visit. We have not decided on a time so concerts may be a deciding factor. What is the best time of year to visit? Do we need to rent a car to see the area? We plan to stay about 10 days.

Go to the Michoacan Calendar of Events http://www.mexico-connect.com/...startup&cal=cal8 and go to March, where you'll find details about the 14th International Guitar Festival which starts on 16 March 2004.

But that's not the only opportunity you'll have to hear classical guitar in Morelia. There's always some kind of live music going on, someplace, some time, and often without a lot of advance publicity.

Paracho is guitar-central in Mexico, and it's about 90 minutes from Morelia. There are guitar concerts there on Friday of each month.

If you read the posts in this forum (do a search under "guitar"), you'll find even more information about Paracho's guitar festival.

I would highly recommend renting a car to maximize your enjoyment of this state. The best time to visit Michoacan, I think, is from June to December. The months to avoid are April and May because that's the dry and hot season.

In Morelia, in the Park by the zoo, I have seen the Mariachas warming up. I would make this more explicit but I am not a huge fan, only I noted that they appeared to have many stringed instruments of the guitar family. Their appearances are probably timed in some way - Saturday Nights. Soomeone will no doubt add some substance to this post. Have fun, the zoo is neat too. Michael in Ottawa

My husband, Jerry, and I were in Morelia in July 2003. We went by local bus from Uruapan to Paracho to do the "guitar research"... and a day or so later made the bus trip to Morelia. We went to Paracho specifically to check out guitar makers and their wares. We were there the week before the Guitar Festival. Jerry bought a wonderful requinto guitar from Jose Luis Granados J. after playing about 15 requintos at 6 or 7 shops.

His shop is at 20 de Noviembre # 349-a - but you will find many shops along that street.

Sr. Granados took four years to build the guitar and waited four more for my husband to come along. Jerry's thrilled with the quality of the guitar.

Thank you DrWaltz for the info about guitars. My wife and I plan to go to Paracho in August. Do you know if the Guitar Festival is always the same time each year? I would like to know more about the requinto guitar. Is this different than the classic spanish six string flat top guitar? It sounds very nice, do you know what woods was used? Was it hot when you was in Morelia in July? Did you spend the night in Paracho?
