neighborhoods

could someone give me suggestions on neighborhoods to check out the next time i am in sma. the last time i was there i stayed on hildago just 3 blks down from the jardin. it was way to noisy and congestested for me. i liked col. san antonio because there was a little more elbow room but still too close for me. i also liked the land out towards attonilco(?) but did not really see any neighborhoods. so what would be lets say a radius of 10 miles safe , not too isolated and not too expensive but not a gated community. someone mentioned a permacaculture commnity.....never found out where that was. i did not have a car so i could not nose around as much as i would have liked too dolores

Hi Dolores,

Try these two sites : www.rancholabradores.com

and

http://www.sanmigueldepartamentos.com/english/index.html

I believe these are both permaculture communities. The first is planned housing, condos outside of town. The second is apartments and housing located in the southern part of town. I have heard very good things about the woman that runts the Apartments Manantial (the 2nd one).

Cuidate,

I don't know the neighborhoods too well because I spend all my time in Centro, gringo that I am. But I have friends in Col. San Antonio, which you've tried, and in Col. Guadalupe, still an easy walk north from Centro but much cheaper and more Mexican. Can't say it's quieter--Mexican cities tend not to be quiet!

The area by the three hot springs pools might be good--though the Jack Nicklaus golf course and resort coming in somewhere around there may shift it way up in price soon. El Computo, can you jump in here? Sounds like you have a better sense of the neighborhoods than I do.

thanksyou mexigrl and carol. yes i do like the area around la gruta. i believe that is the road to dolores h. i like that entire stretch of road although i have not been much further than la gruta. when i was in sma for a month i took a bus out there(la gruta) twice a week.....heavenly!! mexigrl i checked out the website for rancho la bradores it looks very beautiful but a tad ritzy for me. their website was not working well so i emailed them for more info but no word yet. on an old post i found a site for a guy named steve that builds incredible houses out of concrete......he lives on the road to la gruta and it seems there are guite a few intresting and adventures expates out that way. i think i need a real estate dealer that knows about the surrounding countryside. when i was in sma alot of real estate dealers were recommended and i looked at a few things with them but they just did not seem very knowledgable about the areas i was intrested in. anyone know of a good realator? tonight i can hear the coyotes howling near my house. you folks in sma stay warm

I think you should look into places like Los Frailes (road to Celaya) and La Luz (not far from Gigante) Both are served by public transportation.

Los Frailes isn't a gated community since the wide arch you pass through to enter it is open to all, but it does seem to me as the most separate, distinct neighborhood I know of. Absolutely lovely homes there, some huge mansions and castle types, others smaller but still well out of my range. My dog groomer lives there and her home is wonderful, spacious, around a large and lovely courtyard, very private, well landscaped. Lots of homes have walls covered with bougainvillea so its' a riot of color. It's a bit too far out of Centro for me but buses do run there. At the far, far end of it is an RV campground with lake view, though the lake is so polluted that's hardly a benefit. If someone gave me a home there I wouldn't turn it down!

carol that neighborhood sounds nice but i am looking for something a bit simpler. out by la gruta. maybe 1 or 2 acres. i dont think anyone on this forum is living out there as i have not heard from them. the problem is finding a real estate dealer that knows the area. i will probably have to be in mexico to find out what is available. its not as easy as it is in states to find out what is for sale on the internet. guess i will have to wait until my next visit
