morelia: small town or big city?

Can't Post |
I've learned that you can't judge mexican cities by population like you can in the US. I'm from New York and considering Morelia for language school. I like big cities, but think i'd be better off starting out somewhere a little less stressful than Mexico City. Will I be be climbing the walls after a month? I know it's a beautiful town and very atmospheric, but that's about all I know.
Also, if anyone would care to give an opinion about the schools in town, i'd be most appreciative. The one I was attracted to was the CCL on Madero Oriente. Also, why are the Morelia schools pricier than many i've seen - vis. $200 and up a week as opposed to $100-150 a week elsewhere.
gracias

morelia: small town or big city?

It’s all a matter of perspective. For someone coming from some rancho, it’s New York City. For someone from Mexico City, it’s a small town. It’s been characterized as insular and conservative, but it’s also the capital of a state which just inaugurated Cardenas Batel, the grandson of Lazaro Cardenas, as governor.
If forced, I’d characterize Morelia as a mid-size city. We’ve got critical mass – Walmart, Costco, HomeMart, and Office Depot – and the city is also characterized by a genuine neighborhood-feel in some quarters. It’s big enough to have traffic problems in certain areas at certain times of the day, and it’s small enough that the manager of HomeMart knows you by name. It’s small enough that you keep running into the same people…..and then you can find yourself in a scene where you don’t know a soul. As Goldilocks might say, it’s just the right size.
One could be confined to the city limits and still not run out of things to do. I don’t think you’ll be climbing the walls after a month. There’s always something happening. Living here, one tends to stick to a circuit, traversing the same path over and over again, perhaps only venturing into certain parts of the city only for special occasions or certain reasons.

Caramba! And we don't even have Costco or HomeMart in Little Rock. I'll be right down. ;-)

Hello David. I am from Morelia Mich, and currently,I live in the U.S.A. You will like Morelia. It is not as stressful as Mexico City. I believe that Mexico City and New York share similarities because both of them are big cities, crowded, lots of people, trafic etc, etc. Morelia is has the style of a big city, but has the characteristics for a small town. The CCL is a good school. I know the place and it's wonderful. What you are paying is worthed. Anyhow, my best wishes for you in your trip to learn español. Viva la vida y no olvides que la vida es un carnaval! Gracias y hasta la vista.
