I'm surprised that more tourists haven't stayed at the Hotel Mansion Acueducto http://www.hotelmansionacueducto.com, because it boasts an excellent location in a quieter side of downtown, away from the hubub but still very accessible to the gorgeous Templo San Diego (Guadalupe), the Calzada, the Bosque, a safe 20-minute walk from the heart of the city.

My Morelia hotel picks are:

1. Villa Montana. http://www.villamontana.com.mx Be prepared to break out the credit cards, because admittedly it is expensive. But very, very nice. The food is always perfect in the restaurant, but it's the drinks that are really expensive. Well, it is less costly than the Camino Real! The service is absolutely spectacular.

2. Villa San Jose. http://www.villasanjose.com.mx It's across the street from the Villa Montana and less costly.

3. Downtown, the best value is the Hotel Virrey de Mendoza. I love the place. It's elegant, there's usually live piano music in the lobby, the restaurant is white-tablecloth with live music even at breakfast, very reasonably priced.

4. Best of less costly downtown is the Hotel Casino.

5. Mansion Acueducto was a neglected property for a long time, but it's newly renovated, and I think has some promotional rates.

In the B&B category, located in the southern residental neighborhoods are Casa de la Loma, Casa Camelinas, and Casa Aurora de Belen, all excellent properties. Downtown is the luxurious and very exclusive Casa de las Rosas.

The question is, how much do you want to spend and where do you want to be? Morelia has a great selection of lodging.
