lookng for friend in and information on Zacapu

Hello,
I am interested in contacting a friend who is presently in the Zacapu area, as well as information on Zacapu.
I live in Utah, USA, and am trying to call my friend. Every time I call, the operator says that the phone is unavailable or "out of the area"(?), and to try back later. Since I am a spoiled American, <VBG>, and use to call waiting, call forwarding, voice message, or at least a busy signal, I would like to learn about the phone system in Mexico. It is very important that I reach my friend, but I don't know how to go about it. Do you have any suggestions?
Also, in looking at the photographs on the zacapumich.com.mx site, I would love to learn more about the area. (My friend told me that if I went down there, I wouldn't want to come back). There is very little to nothing available so far in my searches on the web. I have always wanted to go visit or stay for awhile in Mexico, but I frequently hear all of the horror stories of people disappearing. But then I see shows on tv where people disappear here in the USA, so I'm not sure how much difference there really is. My Spanish is around elementary level, tho' I am trying to learn more. If I have an idea of what they are talking about I'm fine, but otherwise it comes in like either an old color tv, or an even older black and white! What do you all do when you move down there? How difficult is it to live if you possibly have a stream of income elsewhere?
