Here is some info from MexConnect's Travel section that might provide some guidance: http://www.mexconnect.com/articles/209-peace-and-beauty-roaming-the-hills-around-morelia

Thanks cookj5
I read the section you sent. It was interesting and very enticing. Now just need to find someone to hike with-starting a bit easier and working up to the big stuff

My friend from California that grew up here in Morelia is here now for a lengthy visit and has expressed the desire to revisit some of the places he hiked with the Boy Scouts around Morelia back then. He mentioned places close by like the source of the Rio Chico and if it is still accessible and anything like he remembers. He may yet talk me into doing that.

If you are serious about hiking nearby it would be helpful to know a little more about you like gender, general age, and general physical condition. If you are a serious hiker you probably outclass most of us. Drop a private message or come by Club Campestre some Wednesday around 5pm to meet up with some of the other ex-pats here and see if others share your interest and ability. Couldn't hurt.

I have a couple of gringo friends who hike with me now and then up around Ichaqueo, Tumbisca, Rio Bello etc...there are some real nice trails with spectacular views of Mil Cumbres and several waterfalls. The website posted above is a bit dated, but still a good resource. A good start (depending on your expertise) would be to go to the club campestre in Morelia, continue out through "los filtros viejos" following the trail to the left of the Rio Chiquito towards the town of San Jose de los torres, it would take less than 2 hours depending on your condition (it is a moderate hike). If you don't feel like walking back, you can take a bus that will bring you back down thru Jesus del Monte, Altozano, Santa maria, all the way to Camelinas or Plaza Carillo. Happy Trails......

Thanks for your response. Exploring the trails around Morelia is something I have not yet done but has been casually mentioned recently. With these posts and some talk at home there seems to be some momentum gathering for doing such.

I expect I will see Hans, the author of that hiking article, later today at Club Campestre. We meet there on Wednesdays around 5pm for a cocktail hour gathering. I wasn't aware of his experience in these regards until the link was posted in this thread and now I am a little anxious to speak to him about it. Most of us are retirees but still in reasonably good health, and the fact that Hans was 79 when he wrote that hiking article should inspire us to get beyond the talking stage and make such an outing. Lately I've been thinking I'm about ready to take my walking exploration of Morelia beyond the city limits and get some fresh air now that the weather has turned a bit nicer.

Please join us some Wednesday if you are in the area, I'm sure we could value from your input as well. This is an open invitation to anyone in the area to visit us some afternoon at the Club Campestre restaurant outside at the tables in back. It's always a small gathering of ex-pats of whom I am glad to have made their acquaintance. Always enjoyable.

Thanks for the info everyone. Am out of town now, but I will drop by Club Campestre when I return. Looks like there might be some interesting hiking.

Hans tells me he's not up for hiking these days as he's getting around with the aid of walking canes that resemble ski poles, but assures me he is interested in passing along whatever help and information he can to encourage the activity and may wish to accompany us to the starting points by car. Club prez, Jim, tells me he's not too interested in the hikes but thinks his wife would want to join us, so that offers promise of another female presence for you to feel more comfortable with.

Good, hope to see you soon.
