Yet Another Serene Saturday in Patzcuaro
Can't Post |
Ah, there’s nothing like Saturday in Patzcuaro, and today was no different. Well, two of the major streets are completely torn up, sidewalk to sidewalk – up by the Basilica and a part of Codallos. But that didn’t stop us from checking out everything around the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, buying a sackful of empanadas under the portales, wandering over toward every tablecloth store in town One of the charms about living here is buying tablecloths. Cotton or acrylic, it doesn’t matter. First, there’s the hunt for the favorite color, and then there’s catching up on the latest plaid, and finally “What, you bought the ugliest tablecloth in town?” decided my brother-in-law after we vetoed his selections. Gotta collect ‘em all, y’know. The decision between turquoise with bright pink or bright pink with green will have to put off for another day. Before long it was 1 p.m., time for the mad dash to the Camino Real, down by the Pemex station, in an effort to beat the lunch crowd. Quail was on the menu del dia! And afterward, a drive up El Estribo, which I hadn’t taken in for years. Then back to the Basilica, ambling over to the Ex-Colegio Jesuita where the Purepechas were celebrating their symbols with dance, music and costume. And at Galerias del Arcangel, the proprietress Hilda showed us her new store, just a few steps around the corner and down the hill – Adoquin. Quite simply the finest home furnishings in town. There’s nothing like a day in Patzcuaro to invigorate the spirit, calm frazzled nerves, and recharge batteries.
